Today we decided to celebrate this holiday in our school. Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday?

We have to know that February has long been a month of romance.

One legend says that Valentine was a priest.(card 1) He  lived in Rome during the third century. At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. (card 2) When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he got rid of   marriage for young men.

Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. One of Valentine’s favourite activities was to marry couples despite of the Claudius’s low. But in one moment he was caught for this.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, Valentine fell in love with a young girl — she was his jailor's daughter (card 3) — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is supposed that he wrote her a letter, which he signed «From your Valentine».  Valentine died on the 14 th of January 269 A.D (Anno Domini).

In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. The 14th of February was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of February — Valentine's Day — should be a day for romance.

All  friends and lovers in all social classes could  exchange small handwritten notes.    (card 4) By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when they can’t do it directly.

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. For example, in the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America and the oldest known Valentine card is on display at the British Museum. Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.(сard 5)

Thank you for this story! Now you have the opportunities today to see the competition and of course, you may take part in it. We promise our meeting will be merry and interesting.

Каждому цвету Валентинки будет соответствовать номер группы.

Dear friends! Now let me invite our teams.

  1. Cоставить части текста в правильном порядке.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army.

So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law! Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies - secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death. I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened.

Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.  One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."

I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh - because they know that love can't be beaten!!!

  1. Назвать как можно больше «нежных» слов

Do you like to hear good words? So your next task is to say positive words about a person, whom you love. You must take a step and say one compliment, then you. Don’t repeat anything you have heard.

Sweet, dear, darling, sweetheart, nice, lovely, beautiful, handsome, kind, attentive, caring, pretty, gentle, admirable, delightful, charming, marvelous.

3) Найдите пару.

Командам предлагаются карточки с именами известных деятелей. Команды должны из этих персон составить пары. Командам даётся 1 минута, затем По-очереди зачитывают по одной паре, за каждую получая по баллу.

Ask you if you wanted to dance

They’re looking for a little romance

Given half a chance.

And I’ve never seen that dress

You are wearing or the highlights

In your hair that catch your eyes.

I’ve been blind.

The lady in red is dancing with me

Cheek to cheek.

There’s nobody here

It’s just you and me.

It’s where I want to be.

But I hardly know

This beauty by my side.

You look tonight.
