Урок 50 (2): Сравнение трех типов условных предложений

Практическая цель урока: совершенствование грамматических умений и навыков по теме «Наклонение в английском языке. Сослагательное наклонение».

Задачи:

  1. Систематизировать знания студентов по теме «Формы и типы сослагательного наклонения».

  2. Дальнейшее развитие грамматических умений и навыков устной речи.

  3. Дальнейшее развитие коммуникативной иноязычной компетенции.

Урок 50 (2): Сравнение трех типов условных предложений

Практическая цель урока: совершенствование грамматических умений и навыков по теме «Наклонение в английском языке. Сослагательное наклонение».

Задачи:

  1. Систематизировать знания студентов по теме «Формы и типы сослагательного наклонения».
  2. Дальнейшее развитие грамматических умений и навыков устной речи.
  3. Дальнейшее развитие коммуникативной иноязычной компетенции.

Воспитательные цели: Воспитание уважительного отношения к партнеру по общению, толерантности к мнению других, культуры общения на иностранном языке.

Развивающие цели:

  1. Дальнейшее развитие речемыслительных способностей.
  2. Развитие внимания и умения анализировать и сопоставлять.
  3. Дальнейшее развитие музыкального и фонематического слуха.

Общеобразовательные умения:

  1. Дальнейшее развитие умений парной и групповой работы.
  2. Развитие учебно-познавательной компетенции применительно к иностранному языку.

Оборудование: доска, ситуативные картинки, карточки с индивидуальными заданиями и словами песни, ТСО, методическое пособие по практической грамматике.

Ход урока:

  1. Организационный момент

We go on learning to use conditionals. Listen to the poem written by Oscar Wilde and try to guess what exactly our today’s lesson is aimed at (is devoted to …).

Could we live it over again,

Were it worth the pain,

Could the passionate past that is fled

Call back it dead!

Well, if my heart must break,

Dear love, for your sake,

It will break in music, I know

Poets’ hearts break so.

What is our lesson aimed at to your mind?

Analyse the forms of the verbs and make a conclusion of the destination of today’s lesson

What grammar phenomenon is observed in the phrases like “could we live”/ “were it worth”?

I suppose our lesson is aimed at the (revision of the Subjunctive mood).

To my mind the lesson is devoted to the (use of Conditionals 1and 2)

(Inversion in Conditionals 2) is observed here.

Your predictions are just right and I’d like to define more precisely that our lesson is devoted to revising and comparing Conditionals 1, 2 and 3.

  1. Warm-Up

Read the poem and answer the questions (at page 25 Oral Activity 4)

  • Do you believe in love? If you do, do you believe in love at first sight?
  • Have you ever fallen in love?
  • What did you feel being in love?
  • Would you like to live it over again if you could? Do you think that it will be worth those feelings? Would you live it over the same way or would you change anything? (in your relations, behaviour, etc.)
  • If the past (that is fled) might come back, what moment in your life would you like to go through again? Why?

Here is a list of possibilities you might live over again if the past came back. Which would you choose?

It evokes pleasant memories.

“Champion Game 1”

Divide into teams according to reason of your wish to go through the past again. So we’ve got two teams. The task is to take turns to give your reaction to the following picture situations. You should invent at least 2 situations per picture using conditionals. Each correct answer gets 1 point. Pay attention to the examples:

Team A: 1) If a wasp stung me, I would cry. 2) If a wasp stung me, I would see a doctor.

Team B: 1) If a wasp stung me, it would hurt.

Well, it’s high time you counted your points. How many points have you got? Don’t be upset. You will have an opportunity to get your revenge.

“Champion Game 2”

You should take turns inventing conditionals by using the following pictures as stimuli. Invent at least 2 situations per picture. Each correct sentence gets 1 point. Draw your attention to the examples:

Team A: If only the police caught the thieves. If they catch them I’ll get my car.

Team B: If only I had locked the car. If I had locked it, they wouldn’t have stolen it.

Thank you for your ideas. They were rather interesting, though sometimes a bit dangerous. But as Oscar Wilde said “the idea that is not dangerous is unworthy to be called an idea at all.”

If I were a student and had done all that hard work by now I would be a little bit bored and tired.

  • And what about you? Are you tired?
  • What would you rather do now?
  • If you were an English teacher what would you better do right now?
  • What would you choose for students as a relaxation?

As for me I’d rather listen to some pleasant music as to my mind it’s the best way to relax.

We are going to listen to the song “If you go away”.

  • Does the title of the song mean anything to you?
  • If there were words to the song, which lines would stand out as having particular meaning to you right now? (If you go away I/you …)

Listen to the song and then you are to answer the questions.

Questions:

  • What is the mood of the song?
  • What thoughts and feelings from your own life are on your mind or pre-occupying you that relate to this song?
  • How does the song relate to you right now? What feelings does it evoke in you? (good feelings and pleasant memories/ unpleasant memories/ it leaves me indifferent)

Now let’s divided into groups according to your reaction to the song. The first group consists of the students who relate the song to pleasant feelings and memories, the second – the song evoked unpleasant memories, the third – the words of the song leave them indifferent.

Read the words of the song and do the tasks you’ve got on the sheet of paper.

1) Find the lines that evoked in you good feelings and pleasant memories.

2) Discuss your pleasant feelings and memories in your group.

1) There’s something in what you feel, but that’s only one way of looking at the song. Read the words attentively. May be the words won’t leave you indifferent and you’ll change your mind. But if after reading the words you’re still sure of your feelings it’s OK.

2) Share your opinions with each other and say if your reaction to the song has changed or not

Share your opinions discussing the feelings the song has evoked in you. Students who were indifferent to the song may join either the first or the second group if they convince you in their opinion.

As you see people might be divided into 3 groups according to their attitude to the past: the 1st group usually feel regrets about the past, the 2nd treat the past positively and the 3rd are just indifferent.

  2. Read the story attentively and open the brackets. Your task is to role-play the dialogue between a reporter and an actress (without author’s words). You may underline their words with different colours.

Dramatize the conversation. …, will you act as a reporter/as an actress?  Listen to very attentively and check the forms, if you’ve got another variant we’ll discuss it after dramatizing.

Situation 1: one of you is a reporter and interviews a teacher who is going to retire. Discuss the regrets about the past or present and future plans.

Situation 3: one of you is a reporter and interviews a film producer who is going to change his career. Discuss the regrets about the past or present and future plans.

Situation 4: one of you is a reporter and interviews an Olympic champion who is leaving amateur sport. Discuss the regrets about the past or present and future plans.

Situation 5: one of you is a reporter and interviews an experienced traveler who is going to become a stay-at-home. Discuss the regrets about the past or present and future plans.

To my mind you’ve succeeded in revising Conditionals 1, 2 and 3 and more than that you’ve worked very hard.

I am satisfied with …’s work but he/she has lack of knowledge on this grammar material and his mark is only satisfactory.
