Teacher: Today our lesson is devoted to the topic “Juvenile crimes. Causes and ways of
prevention.” Why are we going to discuss this issue?
Students: 1. Nowadays many young people want to become adults as fast as possible. They
start smoking, drinking and sometimes using drugs. These factors rather often
lead to crimes.
2. Some teenagers do not find common language with their parents and they may
find friends among those who involve them into criminal activity.
3. Other possible answers.
Teacher: Just so. The increasingly high rate of juvenile delinquency is a great challenge in a modern society. Young people are those who will further continue to construct the society and
protect life values. Unfortunately, not all young people choose the right way of joining
an adult world and adequate socializing. Very often it is not their fault that they
become offenders. Will you watch a documentary and later we’ll talk about causes
why youngsters commit crimes.
After watching a documentary the teacher offers the students to say what impression it has produced on them. She explains that sociologists have investigated the problem and defined that several factors are responsible for committing crimes by teenagers. The teacher invites the students to think over the causes of crimes and to call them. On the electronic board the students write down their ideas and then compare them with scientists’ conclusions.

of children, low values placed on children,

parents being involved in crimes,
lack of mutual understanding)
- Negative Influence of Mass Media
(TV programs, films, books full of violence)
- Dangerous Computer Games
Teacher: Good for you. Great job. You have managed to determine
the causes of juvenile crimes that have much in common with
sociologists’ research.
Work in groups
Each group is given a task to discuss one of the causes of juvenile offending and later
explain reasons to all students.
Group №1 Economic Causes
Financial crisis due to poverty gets a person involved in criminal activities. A poor parent may not be able to educate his children, and lack of education may lead to criminal thinking of a child. Homelessness makes the children spend much time outdoors together with other children deprived of normal living conditions.
Lack of employment leads to criminal activities. An unemployed parent needs to run his household. When he does not find any legal opportunity to earn money he may become a participant of criminal activities to finance living of his family and involve his child.
What is more, income inequality of families may lead to the situation when a child envies his classmates who have expensive things while he does not. This turns him to stealing things at shops and at school, and he becomes a thief.
Group №2 Social Environment
Social environment mirrors what teenagers value and what priorities they set. Today youngsters are more independent than the elder generation. When this tendency goes to an extreme, problems arise. Some teenagers want to throw away the traditional principles most of which were considered positive by many generations. Youngsters are reluctant to listen to the advice of adults. They behave in the way they like, so it might bring them to committing crimes.
In addition, in some classes a child with a low self-esteem can experience negative influence of his friends and feel peer pressure. He is not able to resist classmates who are engaged in offending. Then the risk of his becoming an offender gets higher.
Group №3 Family Problems
The important factor of juvenile crimes is the increasing number of divorces and appearance of single-parent families. The children in single-parent families are taken less care of and they feel being neglected and isolated. The lack of parental love, family violence and abuse of children make them hostile and cynical towards everybody.
Moreover, the children whose parents are drug or alcohol abused have a greater danger to follow their example. Such families have no money for normal life and their children are more likely to become offenders.
Group №4 Negative Influence of Mass Media
One of the reasons of high rates of youth delinquency is the negative influence of mass media. Some TV producers, film makers, book publishers are more concerned with profits than with the quality of production. These books , movies and violent computer games may also have negative effects on children. When teenagers are exposed to violence, aggressive ideas are introduced into their minds, which can bring harm to their mentality.
Some teenagers watch films showing murders, fights and crimes rather often, while their parents do not know about that. Gradually children learn to think that violence is an ordinary way of life, shooting and cheating are ways to succeed. Such wrong understanding has an impact on their life style. Violent computer games produce the same damaging effect on human minds.
Teacher: We have analyzed the reasons why young people can come to delinquency.
It is awful when teenagers remain face-to-face with their problems without
any assistance. They need help when get into trouble.
Discuss in groups possible ways to prevent juvenile crimes, print them on
computers. Finally, we’ll make up a joint document of solutions. If solutions
of some groups are alike, all together try to find the proper words
to formulate the ideas. Will you say why you consider these suggestions
important.

Teacher: Summing up, what conclusions can we draw?
Students: 1. We can say that it is more important to prevent juvenile crimes
than later to rehabilitate and reintegrate young offenders into the society.
2. Parents should devote more attention and spend more time with their children
if they do not want their child to get on a wrong way. Trusty talks with a child
are of a great importance.
3. Rather often teachers also can help a child if he gets into trouble. They can
share their experience with him and explain why it is better to avoid a trying
situation.
4. All students express their viewpoints.
