Ход урока:

1.Организационный момент. Введение в тему урока.    – 2 мин.

Teacher: Today we are going to discuss a  theme that is closely connected with the headline written on the blackboard:

“Local Girl’s Evidence Gets Mugger Two Years’ Prison”

One pupil reads it.

Teacher: What do you think we are going to speak about?

(Pupils try to express their guesses. There is a table on the blackboard with communicative formulas ”Giving an opinion”)

The teacher asks some more questions to help the students to speak about  crime, otherwise it might be difficult for them.

- What words can help us understand the theme? (evidence, prison)

- But what kind of crime is described in this headline? (mugging)

- Is it serious or not? (Yes, it is.)

- Is the punishment fair? (Yes, it is)

2.Речевая разминка.                                                                 – 5 мин.

Teacher: So, what do you think makes people commit crimes?

Ps’ answers: People don’t believe in God and they sin and these sins lead them to crimes.

Teacher: Let’s turn to the Bible. What are the seven deadly sins according to the Bible?

Ps’ answers:

1. LUST  is usually thought of as excessive thoughts or desires of a sexual nature.

2. Gluttony

"Excess"
(
Albert Anker, 1896)

Derived from the Latin gluttire, meaning to gulp down or swallow, gluttony  is the over-indulgence and over-consumption of anything to the point of waste. In the Christian religions, it is considered a sin because of the excessive desire for food or its withholding from the needy.[10]

3. Greed

1909 painting The Worship of Mammon by Evelyn De Morgan.

Greed (Latin, avaritia), also known as avarice or covetousness, is, like lust and gluttony, a sin of excess. However, greed (as seen by the church) is applied to a very excessive or rapacious desire and pursuit of wealth, status, and power.

4. Sloth - is believed to be the failure to utilize one's talents and gifts. It is also the neglect to take care of something that one should do.

5. Wrath (Latin, ira), also known as anger or "rage", may be described as inordinate and uncontrolled feelings of hatred and anger.

6. Envy.

Those who commit the sin of envy resent that another person has something they perceive themselves as lacking, and wish the other person to be deprived of it.

7.  Pride - is considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins, and the source of the others. It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and excessive love of self.

Teacher: - Why are they called mortal?

Ps:          -    The deadly sins are the sins that are seen as the origin of the other

sins, they engender other sins, other vices.

  • A mortal sin is believed to destroy the life of grace within the person and thus creates the threat of eternal damnation.
  • In terms of life in society they often lead to violence, crime and death.

             -  The Christian Church also recognizes seven virtues, which correspond
inversely to each of the seven deadly sins.

Teacher: Look at the ten commandments and say which of them, from your point of view are the most important for bringing up people with the capital letter, law-abiding citizens caring about the well-being of the people, not criminals.

- Pupils’ answers.

5. Развитие навыков просмотрового чтения и

обсуждения прочитанного.                                                                      -10 мин.

Teacher: So what qualities must people develop in themselves to avoid crime and punishment for it? Now I’d like to offer your attention 2 texts about some good qualities that are viewed as essential qualities of American character and a text about a private British boarding school. You’ll work in 3 groups.

Учащиеся просматривают тексты и кратко (за 1 мин.) сообщают о чем текст. Затем группы обсуждают прочитанное (cross-group discussion.)

American Character   Lesson 1   Time to Choose

Puritan – (a member) of a protestant religious group in the 16th and 17th centuries who wished to make religion simpler and less ceremonial.

…in a Darwinist way – according to Darwinism, i.e. the scientific idea that animals and plants have their present form because of the working of natural selection.

One of the most powerful parts of the American character is the puritan work ethic. This is the philosophy of the Puritans, one of the original groups of colonists in America, that hard work, and a simple life are what God asks of humanity. Nowadays, Americans tend to leave God out, but still they think of this as the right way to live. For example, work is often the most important part of an American’s life, and health and family come after. Honesty is also highly important, and lying or cheating at work or school will get you fired or thrown out immediately.

Individualism is another key part of U.S. culture. Every American, beginning almost in childhood, is considered responsible for himself or herself, and the way their life goes. This combined with the Puritan ethic makes Americans very competitive, since they see the world in a Darwinist way, where wealth and success come to those who work hard enough for it. Being poor and unsuccessful is considered a sign of laziness or lack of ambition.

Questions

1. Prove that Americans are hard-working and responsible people.

2. What is the attitude to work in Ukraine?

3. What are American stereotypes in character?

4. What are Ukrainian stereotypes in character?

6. Развитие навыков аудирования в процессе выполнения тестов к видеоклиппам (по тематике прочитанных текстов.)                   - 10 мин.

Teacher: Now, the other two groups, please  render the content of your texts. After that you’ll be offered videoextracts with tests on your respective topics.

American Character    Lesson 2   Time to find out

Underdog – a person that is expected to lose in a competition with another.

However, Americans are also generally very optimistic. There are countless proverbs and sayings in the U.S. about how one should keep trying, no matter how hopeless the situation. Americans hate to give up and telling them something is “impossible” only makes them want to prove to you that it’s not. Americans also love the “underdog” – the person who fights against impossible odds and wins.

In addition to working hard, Americans also play hard, often take sports, exercise and enjoy life very seriously. Even friendly family games can be very competitive. But despite their competitive natures, Americans like to think of themselves as very friendly and outgoing. Americans want to be liked by almost everyone they meet, and they think of every new encounter as a chance to make new friends.

Rugby School

Rugby school in Warwickshire, in the heart of the English Midlands, is one of the best known in Britain. It was founded in 1567 and aims to provide its pupils with the highest standard of education.

It’s a fee-paying school and one which provides a whole range of facilities for boys and girls. There is a language lab with computers, recording equipment and satellite TV. Basically any language that you’d like to learn you can learn it here. There is also a new library, a sports centre, a gym, a drama studio, music facilities. So there’s never any time to be bored; there’s always something you can go off and do.

The habit here is academic work. When they go on to be bankers, vets, farmers – whatever it might be, they must work hard at that particular discipline. But being a boarding school they’re trying to do a huge number of other things. They take care of such qualities of all-around excellence as being able to do several things, being able to see things through and plan things through to the end, leadership, teamwork, all that kind of thing. These are very important qualities and employers start to look at that.

Life at Rugby certainly isn’t all work and no play. There’s a surprising range of activities outside the classroom, from rock bands and scuba diving to making television programmes in the school’s media centre.

If you walk around Rugby school and look at the buildings, you do get the sense of families having been here. It’s an old school. It’s been on the go for hundreds of years so there is a feeling of tradition. At the same time it’s a very innovative school and tries to do lots of new things. The facilities are exceptional and the tradition gives the whole school a sense of community and a real atmosphere.

The school gave its name to Rugby football. The game was invented here. During a game of football in 1823, a pupil called William Webb Ellis ran with the ball instead of kicking it – and in those days you weren’t allowed to do that. His friends didn’t like him very much for that and thought that he’d spoilt things, and it took really quite a number of years before that was incorporated into the game.

I think it says a lot about the Rugby boy and now (since 1976) about the Rugby girl, that you need a little bit of a rebellion in you not to take things for granted, to be able to say, well, why are we doing things this way? Isn’t there a better way of doing it, and can’t we make the world a better place somehow?
