  1. Edward the Confessor died without a son to follow him. 15 years before his death he had promised the English Crown to the French Duke who was his cousin. But the British nobility /дворянство/ supported Harold, Earl of Wessex and he was crowned in York. The Duke gathered the army to invade England. On the 14 of October he won the victory in the battle near Hastings. He was crowned as William I and brought a new law and a new language. The aristocracy began to speak French. William I wanted to know all about his new country. He ordered to count all the population in England, their houses, castles and to measure their land. Later on this information was written in the famous Domesday Book /Книга Судного дня/. His reign tied /связала/ England dinastically, commercially and culturally. The White Tower in London reminds us of that famous ruler.

2. He is Britain's national hero. At the age of twelve he entered the Royal Naval College , studied excellently and passed his lieutenant's examination in 1777.

He was brave. He always led his men by his own example. He first made his name at the battle of St. Vinsent. During the wars against France he took parts in many battles and lost his right arm and the sight in his right eye.

He was a skillful commander enjoying great love and devotion of the men who served under him: they were ready to die for him.

He sailed from England for the last time to meet France and Spain. At his instruction the famous signal was on the flagship /флагман/ "England expects that every man will do his duty".

He was on the deck when he was wounded and died a few hours after that. But before he died he learned that he had won a great victory at Cape Trafalgar.

3. The army marched deep into the countryside. They united with some tribes and conquered others one by one. Slowly, they pushed their enemies further and further into the mountains of Wales and Scotland. The soldiers built forts in Wales and in north of England to protect their conquered land.  The angry unconquered tribes hiding in the mountains and valleys raided /совершали набеги / northern England again and again.

The ruler decided to build a Wall right across the country to control them. 15 000 soldiers guarded the wall, which was I2O kilometres long and about 4 metres high. Every 8 kilometres there was a large fort which

could hold up to 1,000 soldiers. About every 1,500 metres there was a small fort, called a milecastle, which could hold up to 30 soldiers. They guarded the wall all the time. If the tribes attacked, they ran for help or signalled with flags.

If you come to England you”11 see_...’s wall built in the year 122.

4. She was a daughter of a famous king. She received an excellent classical education. She could read Latin and Greek and spoke French and ltalian fluently. People called her "Good Queen Bess".

During her life England became a great sea power. Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh made raides on the Spanish colonies in America and captured Spanish ships with treasure from the New World.

She helped the Dutch Protestants and sent her fleet to the Invincible Armada. She spoke to the crew of her ships and won their hearts by saying that she was ready "...to live or to die amongst you… for my God, and for my kingdom, and for my people.... I know I am a weak woman, but I have the heart of a king of Englandr too!"

Her ships won the great victory. Her reign was one of the greatest periods of English Literature. W.Shakespeare lived at that time. By the way, she wrote letters to Russian Tsar Ivan IV and signed the first treaty between England and Russia in 1734.

5. He was a legendary hero of those times.  He was well-known and loved by the poor people of England. He was tall, strong and handsome, and his songs were heard everywhere. He was brave, too, and there was no better shooter in that part of the country. He was also kind and never hurt the weak or the poor.

One day Normans killed his father and burnt his house.  He wanted to take revenge upon the oppressors and many poor people joined him. They made him their leader. People called his men the Merry Men.  Some people say that he was called Hood because he and his men wore  green hoods. He became known not only in England but in many other countries.  Ht and his man  lived in Sherwood Forest. And now we know him also as … .

6. He was a real prince of romance: young /he was twenty-five at the times of certain events/, handsome, tall and fair, brave and adventurous. He was coming, he said to win the crown of England and place it at his father's feet. He was sure of support of the people from his Motherland, the poor but courageous men to whom loyalty to him was passion.

He sailed from France, with him was a big French  warship "Elisabeth". In the sea they were met by a British warship.

During the battle both warships were damaged, but he landed on the west coast of Scotland.

The invasion of England began. He was quickly moving to the south. There was panic in London. But suddenly his army stopped.  His army finding itself in the heart of England missed the families and decided to go home to Scotland.

For months he was hunted through the wild place. A huge reward was-offered but people didn’t betray /предали/ him. Finally the England managed to get him to the coast where a ship was waiting to take him to France and safety.

We’ve learned about him from the song this year.
