8 class test5

Task1Read the text and find the best answer to the questions below.

All alone on the ocean

1

Captain Joshua Slocum was the first man to sail around the world alone. His great

adventure happened almost by accident. He went to visit a friend in Boston in 1892 and there he found a boat that had been lying useless for seven years. The boat was called the Spray. Suddenly, 48-year-old, Joshua began to behave like a young man half his age. He decided to sail the Spray round the world. First he had to rebuild the boat — it took three years — then he went fishing in the Spray to test it at sea.

2

By 1895, Joshua was ready and started his journey from Boston on 26 April. The first

weeks crossing the Atlantic went by peacefully. By 10 July, the Spray had reached a point 1,200 miles east of Boston, and on 4 August the Spray reached the coast of Spain. For the next part of the journey Slocum decided that in order to avoid pirates in the Suez Canal and the Red Sea he would change his route and go further south round Cape Horn at the tip of South America and then sail to the west.

3

But even this route was not free from pirates and thieves. Once Joshua was followed

by pirates. They sailed their boat up next to the Spray and one of the men climbed up. It was Black Pedro, a criminal who was wanted by the police. Joshua was very frightened when he saw Pedro on the Spray, but he didn't lose his head. He pretended that there were three sailors on board by changing his clothes and making a kind of dummy dressed in a sailor's uniform. From different places on the Spray he shot at the pirates. Black Pedro, thinking that there were three sailors, was frightened and made the pirates go back to their boat and sail away.

4

After this incident the journey went smoothly for a few weeks. On 5 October Joshua

reached Brazil, and from then until 15 December the journey went well. But when Slocum reached Uruguay, he had to have his boat repaired. On 26 January, 1896, the Spray was finally ready to sail again.

Joshua sailed south towards Cape Horn, but when he got there he was caught up in a

huge storm. For three days and nights the Spray was pushed by the storm. The storm forced the boat away from Cape Horn, but finally the storm ended and Joshua reached the Pacific Ocean.

5

On 16 July Joshua reached Apia in the Kingdom of Samoa, in the South Pacific, where he organized a great feast on his boat and invited the king. On 20 August, the Spray left the harbor in Apia and continued on its way. Two months later, the Spray arrived in Sydney, Australia, and then Joshua sailed on to Tasmania, where the people gave him a warm welcome. Slocum was lucky with the winter weather; all he had to do was read stories about sea voyages.

6

In September 1897, he reached the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. By 4 June, 1898, the Spray was heading towards her final destination in the United States. The end of the journey came on 27 June 1898, as Joshua Slocum sailed into Newport, Rhode Island, after a cruise of more than 46,000 miles around the world, which took him three years, two months and two days.
