Hobbies

A hobby is a favourite pastime of a person. It is something done for pleasure. It must be admitted that the time spent in doing nothing is wasted and lost time is never found again. But if you have chosen an occupation according to your character and taste, lucky you are, because you’ve made your life more interesting and exciting. Lots of people have hobbies, young and old; they take up something in their spare time.

Hobbies differ like tastes. They are divided into four large classes: doing things, making things, collecting things and learning things.

  • The most popular of all hobby groups is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities, everything from gardening to travelling, going on sightseeing trips and doing sports. Many people are fond of going sightseeing about ancient towns. They admire historical buildings, churches, palaces and castles. As a rule, tourists are interested in photography. They usually take pictures of relics of ancient culture. They always take their cameras with them when they go abroad or travel about their home country. Some people are fond of going on a hike and admire the beauty of nature. Others devote much time to gardening. They conserve a lot so their hobby is both useful and pleasant. Gardening is one of the oldest of man’s hobbies. It is well-known fact that the English are very fond of gardening and growing flowers, especially roses. Beyond all doubt, doing sports is the most exciting and useful hobby. Sport does a lot of good to your health and it makes your character. You feel as fit as fiddle if you take up this hobby. Both grown-ups and children enjoy playing different computer games. It has become one of the most popular hobbies. It’s a real pleasure to invent new games and programs.
  • Making things includes: drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts. Some hobbyists compose music or play musical instruments.
  • Almost everyone collect something at some period in his life: stamps, coins, match-boxes, badges, postcards, toys, watches, paintings, rare books and other art objects. Those who are keen on music have a rich collection of tape-recordings or laser discs. They may have recordings of operas, jazz concerts, folk music or light music or amateur songs.
  • No matter what kind of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning from it. By reading about the things he is interested in, he is adding to what he knows. In my opinion, learning foreign languages is also a kind of hobby. English attracts me more than stamps or coins. On the one hand, it’s enjoyable to speak and read English. On the other hand, I’m sure; you can’t get a good education without knowledge of a foreign language.
