Pupil 1,2: IT’S HALLOWEEN (by Jack Prelutsky)

It’s Halloween! It’s Halloween!

The moon is full and bright

And we shall see what can’t be seen

On any other night:

Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls,

Grinning goblins fighting duels,

Werewolves rising from their tombs,

Witches on their magic brooms.

In masks and gouns we haunt the street

And knock on doors for trick or treat.

Tonight we are the king and queen,

For oh tonight it’s Halloween!

Тeacher: Halloween, originated from the Celts and Druids, who were people’s priests and teachers. The Celts worshipped nature, and had many gods, the sun god, being their favorite. Annual coming of coldness and disappearance of the sun was for them a mystery, the season of death, the time when their god was attacked by evil powers. Halloween is a very special holiday – a combination of holidays. It is a time for games, fun and fortune telling, for ghost stories and making mischief. Also it is holiday for the dead. Many ancient people believed that on certain nights of the year the spirits of the dead were on the loose and went wandering. They also believed that on those nights people could see into the future.

(Учитель проводят с учащимися игру “The Witch’s Cauldron”)

The witch sits in front of the Pupils before a cauldron, under which there is an artificial faire. She has a candle in her hand. The fortunes are written on slips of paper and placed in the cauldron. One after another pupils come up to the cauldron and draw out a fortune. When a quest opens the paper, and there is nothing there, the witch says she can read the clean paper. She holds it above the candle, with the invisible writing nearer the flame and the words become readable.

Teacher : Many Years later when the Celts became Christians they, as other Christians, celebrated All Hallows Day (now All Saint’s Day) on November 1. It was a day to remember important dead Christians who did not have name days of their own. The Celts called the night before holy evening. It was shortened to “Halloween”. Nowadays people do not believe in witches and evil spirits and Halloween is just an excuse for having a good time.

Pupil 3,4(чтение текста): On the night of Halloween jack-o’lanterns can be seen looking out of the windows of many houses and apartments after dark. Sometimes lanterns are kept burning all night. Different games are played and bonfires are lit and children like to go “trick-or-treating”. Dressed up in white sheets or masks and costumes, they knock on doors and ask the resident if they want “trick or treat”. If the people in the house give the children a “treat” (usually money or sweets) the children gob away, if they get nothing they play a “trick” on them, making a lot of noise, spelling flour on their front doorstep.

Children sing the song “Trick or treat”

Trick or treat

Trick or treat,

Trick or treat,

Give us something good to eat.

Give us something sweet to take.

Give us cookies, fruit and gum,

Hurry up and give us some.

You had better do it quick.

Or we’ll surely play a trick.

Trick or treat, trick or treat,

Give us something good to eat.

Pupil 5: Instead of collecting sweets or fruit on Halloween night some children collect money for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). That way they can fun and at the same time help children all round the world.

Pupil 6: As you can see children came to our festival in costumes and some of them have made jack-o-lanterns. Let’s listen to their stories and choose the best jack-o-lantern.

Pupil 7: Now I’d like to tell you about traditional English food which is cooked for celebration. If you are going to throw a Halloween Party or just want to scare your family, these recipes will be just what you need.

VAMPIRE BROTH

Ingredients

Cola

Vanilla ice cream

Fill glasses about two thirds full with the cola, add a scoop of ice cream and watch it go all frothy.

DEVIL’S EYEBALLS

Ingredients

6 eggs (boiled hard, cooled and peeled)

Cream cheese

12 green stuffed olives (e.g. with paprika)

Ketchup

Not all Halloween treats need to be sweet. Cut the eggs in halves. Remove yolks and fill the hole with cream cheese. Cut the olives and press them into each cream cheese eyeball. Dip a toothpick into ketchup and draw broken blood vessels in the cream cheese. These eyeballs look terrific!

Song.

BOBBING FOR APPLES (by Jack Prelutsky)

Watch us bobbing for an apple,

For an apple, apple, apple,

But no apple, apple, apple,

Not an apple can I get.

Oh I cannot catch an apple,

Not one apple, apple, apple.

Though my sister got an apple,

All I got was soaking wet.

Pupil 9: Children all over the world like to play game and we invite you to take part in our competition.

Ducking for Apples

A large round washtub, filled with water is placed on the table, each player tries to secure an apple in his mouth without helping one’s hands.
