Introduction

Today we are going to speak about Oscar Wild and one of his numerous stories “The Devoted Friend”.

But first of all I ‘d like to ask you some questions about friendship.

Warming up

Do you have many friends?

How do you get on with them?

Who is your best friend?

Do you have common interests?

Do you often argue?

Does your friend help you if you are in need? What about you?

Are you really good friends?

Oscar Wild is a mysterious writer, who didn’t find any recognition  during his life. He is well - known for his extraordinary talent and humor. More than one hundred years have passed since his death but people still read his novels, poems and fairy-tales and find them interesting. His literary heritage is very large and his plays are often staged nowadays.

Listening At home you read an extract  from  the  fairy-tale  “The Devoted friend”  by Oscar Wild. But it is without the beginning and without the end as well . So, I would like you to listen to the beginning of this story and answer these two questions.

Who decided to tell the story about the Miller and his friend and whom ? (the Linnet)

Why did he decide to do it? What made him do it?( because the water –rat didn’t understand what the devoted friend means)

  • During the spring ,the summer and the autumn little Hans was happy because there was a lot to eat and to sell.
  1. When was little Hans unhappy and why?
  • During the winter he was unhappy because there was nothing to bring to the market.
  1. Why didn’t the Miller visit little Hans in the winter?
  • The Miller didn’t visit little Hans in the winter because he thought that when people were  in trouble they should be left alone.
  1. Who wanted to help little Hans?
  • The Miller’s son wanted help little Hans. And show him his rabbits.
  1. What did the Miller’s son want to do to help little Hans?
  • He wanted to give little Hans half his porridge and show him his rabbits.
  1. Why didn’t  the Miller want little Hans to come up?
  • The Miller didn’t want little Hans to come up because he was afraid he would envy him.

Diccussing Friendship

Read through the text again  to find some statements about friendship. What are they ?

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some wonderful quotations by Oscar Wild  for the presentation and you want to read  to your friend some of them.

  1. Anybody can sympathize with the suffering of a friend but it requires a very fine nature to sympathize with the friend’s success.

  11. No object is so beautiful that, under certain conditions, it will not look ugly.

  13. Of course I have played outdoor games. I once played dominoes in an open air cafe in Paris.
  14. One’s real life is so often the life that one does not lead.
  15. Pessimist: One who, when he has the choice of two evils, chooses both.
