1. I remember we’d gone to see my aunt who lived just a couple of blocks away, just round the corner;we can’t have been away more than a couple of hours; I suppose it was about 11.30 pm when we got back. They must have gone in through the front door. No windows were broken, and the door hadn’t been forced. The police suspect that a child must have gone through the small window we keep open so the cat can get in and out at night. They say the child would have opened the front door for the adult accomplice, who then searches the house. Then they both leave silently through the front door without disturbing anyone.

2. It was terrible. I had my bag stolen as I was walking along the High Street. I suppose it must have been about 6 o’clock. My purse probably contained about 300 pounds and my credit card. And just a few odds and ends, you know. Anyway, he, the thief, I mean, ran down the road and jumped into a car that was parked on the corner. He can’t have been much older than my eldest son, who is 16 now. They must have seen me coming out of the bank on the High street.

 3. I was at the gas station, as I always am on the weekends. I was just checking the day’s takings when a car drove up and two masked men got out. They came up to the cashier’s window and then one of them pulled out a gun and pointed it at me; holding the gun to my head, they forced me into the washroom-and locked the door. Then they made their getaway with all the money in the till; there can’t have been much more than 500 pounds in the till. Funny thing was, they came back a few minutes later and asked me for directions to the next town; they can’t have recognized me or the gas station. I reckon they must have been from out of town judging by their accent …

 4. I think this guy must be the world’s worst robber or something, or it must have been his first time, because he walks in, and he goes up to the cashier-but you see, there was quite a long queue, and there were all these people waiting. And this woman tells him to get to the back of the queue and wait his turn. He looks a bit embarrassed at this, and shuffles to the back of the queue. .. Anyway, eventually he gets to the cashier and he gives her a note saying: “Hand over all the money or else”, but she can’t make out his handwriting. So, he starts explaining what the note says - no, really, it’s a true story-and that’s when he gets really panicky. And in the end, he just gives up and leaves, saying he will come back later. Honestly, it’s true, it happened to a friend of mine.

 5. I was down the food department looking for a packet of breakfast cereal-it must have been a few minutes before they were due to close - when I saw this woman looking a bit suspicious. She kept looking around, and she wasn’t carrying a bag or anything, which I thought a bit odd. I’d say she was in her thirties, very slim … anyway she picked up this packet of biscuits and walked off with it, but when I got to the till I saw one of the assistants tasking to her in the office with a police officer, so she couldn’t have got away with it..

  1. Работа с текстом Jack the Ripper

Чтение и перевод текста, выполнение заданий. Затем обсуждение: Кто по вашему мнению был Джеком Потрошителем и почему.

HISTORICAL TABOO

JACK THE RIPPER

Between August and November 1888, five prostitutes were murdered in the East End of London - and all of the bodies were horribly mutilated. A short time afterwards, the press received a letter from a man claiming to be the murderer. He called himself "Jack the Ripper". The real murderer was never caught, and the true identity of "Jack the Ripper" remains a mystery to this day.

Annie Chapman was the first victim. The second victim was Kate Eddowes. She had a drink problem and also prostituted herself occasionally to get enough money to drink. Mary Jane Kelly was another of the Ripper's victims. Mary Ann Nichols was the fourth victim and just like the rest she was a prostitute. And finally there was Elizabeth Stride who had come from Sweden.

At that time the police had very little to help them. All they knew was that it  was a man with some skill at using a knife, a butcher or a doctor perhaps. They came up with a very basic profile of the killer: He was between 20 and 40 years of age in 1888; he lived in the East End because he managed to escape so quickly; he had medical expertise; he may have been a foreigner; he was right-handed; he had a regular job since all the murders occurred on weekends; and he was single because he could roam the streets at all hours.

1. The Duke of Clarence (Eddy)

The Duke of Clarence was Queen Victoria's eldest grandson. Eddy frequently went slumming in the East End where he met and had an affair with a shop girl called Annie Crook. When Queen Victoria heard all about the scandal she sent Annie to a mental asylum, and killed everyone who knew anything about the Duke of Clarence and his lover - including the five prostitutes, who were friends of Annie's.

2. James Kenneth Stephen

Suspicion also falls on James Kenneth Stephen. He was Eddy's tutor at university. People believe that James became the "Ripper" when Eddy ended their homosexual relationship.

3. George Chapman

His original name was Severin Klosowski, land he was a Polish immigrant. He had a number of marriages and relationships that all ended in violence or murder. He was convicted of murder and hanged on 7th April 1903. Apparently, his final words were: "I am Ja ... " But unfortunately he wasn't able to finish the sentence.

4. Montague John Druitt

His body was found floating in the Thames some weeks after the last murder. He was the son of a surgeon. His parents died in early 1888 and he was sent to an asylum for depression and paranoid delusions. His family were convinced that he was the murderer. He committed suicide and left a note saying:

"Since Friday I felt I was going to be like mother, and the best thing for me was to die."

True/ False

  1. Five crimes were commited in the 18th century.
  2. The killer was a professor of University
  3. The killer’s name was Robin the Ripper
  4. The police knew who was the killer.

  1. Подведение итогов
