All Future tenses

All Future-in the Past tenses*

* Future- in the Past is made up with the help of an auxiliary verb «WOULD», which we use instead of the auxiliary verb «will».

For example, "will go” (Future Simple) – "would go” (Future Simple – in the Past).

For example:

  1. He said: "My friends usually come at 5.”

He said that his friends usually came at 5.

  1. She told her sister: "I am reading a very interesting book.”

She told her sister that she was reading a very interesting book.

I told them that I would do this job in two days.

  1. Teacher gives the sentences in the direct speech and students should transform them into the reported speech:
  1. The author said: “I published a new book”.
  2. The writer said: “This genre is very popular these days”.
  3. Tom told me: “I am reading this book now”.
  4. Kate said to us: “That novel has influenced my views”.
  5. John said: “I will go to the library tomorrow”.
  1. Teacher gives the task to make up 2 sentences with the new words (work in pairs). Students make up sentences together and then present them to the whole class.

Слайд 4

At the age of 16, Tolkien met Edith Mary Bratt , who was three years older, when he and his brother Hilary moved into the boarding house in which she lived .

Слайд 5

During his time at Pembroke, Tolkien wrote THE HOBBIT and the first two volumes of THE LORD OF THE RINGS , whilst living at 20 NORTHMOOR ROAD in North Oxford Tolkien was Professor of English Language and Literature in Merton College (1945-1959)

Слайд 6

Tolkien was much inspired by early Germanic, especially Old English literature, poetry, and mythology The Hobbit is a fantasy novel and children's book. It was published on 21 September 1937 to wide critical acclaim, being nominated for the Carnegie Medal and awarded a prize from the New York Herald Tribune for best juvenile fiction. The book remains popular and is recognized as a classic in children's literature .

Слайд 7

THE LORD OF THE RINGS The Lord of the Rings is a high fantasy epic. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during the Second World War.

Слайд 8

The title of the novel refers to the story's main antagonist, the Dark Lord Sauron, who had in an earlier age created the One Ring to rule the other Rings of Power as the ultimate weapon in his campaign to conquer and rule all of Middle-earth.

Слайд 9

INFLUENCE The Lord of the Rings developed as a personal exploration by Tolkien of his interests in philology, religion (particularly Roman Catholicism), fairy tales, Norse and general Germanic mythology, and also Celtic and Finnish mythology

Слайд 10

Influence on fantasy genre The enormous popularity of Tolkien's epic saga greatly expanded the demand for fantasy fiction. Largely thanks to The Lord of the Rings, the genre flowered throughout the 1960s, and enjoys popularity to the present day.

Слайд 11

Impact on culture "The Lord of the Rings" is not only a tale of adventures and mythical beings, but it also touches upon some questions of philosophy and morality. Heroic deeds, the unity for the sake of a common cause, true love, the triumph of Good over Evil - all these could be found in the epic.

Слайд 12

Check yourself! 1. Who was John Tolkien? 2. How much older was his wife? 3. What subjects did Tolkien teach in Merton College? 4. Is THE HOBBIT a book for children or for adults? 5. How many years had THE LORD OF THE RINGS been writing? 6. What does the title of the story refer to?
