London Bridge

London Bridge is two thousand years old. The first bridge was of wood. Then people built the bridge of stone and called it London Bridge. There were houses and shops on it and people paid money when they crossed the bridge.

In 1831 a new bridge rose on the place of the first bridge. But the city grew very quickly and in I960 the people of London wanted to build a large new bridge at that place.

A very rich American bought the old London Bridge as people buy old things. He wanted to show the old bridge in America to people for money. The people of London liked their old London Bridge. But the city needed money for the new bridge.

The American brought the parts of the bridge on a ship to Arizona in the USA. Workers built the old bridge but there was no river under it now, only a street. No ships pass under it now, only people walk along the street and look at the old bridge. In 1973 the new London Bridge was opened on the site of the old bridge over the Thames.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is a character of the works written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes is the only “consulting detective” in the world.

People often come to him to find a criminal or to solve a problem. He doesn’t work in police though policemen sometimes apply to Sherlock for a help in the investigation.

This detective lives in an apartment at 221B Baker Street, London. Everybody knows this address and comes for help and advice. Later John Watson joins him in his adventures and starts to live with Sherlock.

One of the most interesting facts about Sherlock Holmes is that Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired by a real person – an inventor Joseph Bell. Moreover, Sherlock Holmes is the character with the biggest number of movies and series about him.

Among the numerous screen versions of the books about Sherlock Holmes the latest is very popular and very original – the series where Sherlock and John are living in present-day London.

The Globe Theatre

The Globe Theatre (also known as the Shakespearean Globe Theatre) is one of the most recognized theatres in the world. It was built in 1599 and was one of four major theatres in London, including the Swan Theatre, the Rose Theatre, and the Hope Theatre. The original Globe Theatre held around 3,000 people and was made from oak. It was designed as a 3-story, open-air, circular amphitheater built near the Thames River on the South Bank of the Thames.

The Globe Theatre became a place where poor and wealthy people could enjoy entertainment together. All female roles were performed by young boys because theatres were considered improper for 'ladies.' During each performance, flags were used to advertise the type of play being performed; for example, a white flag depicted comedy shows, a black flag was used for tragedies, and a red flag for historical plays. There have been a number of plays performed at The Globe Theatre, including many of the plays written by William Shakespeare: Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth and others.
