Coming to Yelabuga for the first time everyone can be impressed by the beauty of the local landscapes. Yelabuga is connected with the names of different famous outstanding people who lived, worked and left their prints in the history of Yelabuga.

The town is proud of its old history, and at any time citizens of Yelabuga are ready to show the guests of the town its monuments, museums, historical places connected with the names of outstanding people.

Today we are going to tell about marshal Leonid Govorov, who stands out tall from among the Russian heroes who contributed heavily to Nazi Germany`s routing over 60 years ago. Leonid Govorov is best remembered for his contribution to the heroic defense of Leningrad.

He was born on the twenty second of February in 1897 in the village Butirki (Vyatka province) in the family of a farmer. His father, like many other paupers regularly left home in search of better paying jobs so that his four sons would have enough money to contribute their education.

In 1909 the family came to Yelabuga, there his father got the job of clerk in the town technical high school. In 1916 Leonid entered Polytechnic Institute in St. Petersburg but was quickly drafted to the army and sent to Artillery Academy. In June 1917 Govorov was given a rank of second lieutenant and was sent as a junior officer to the Mortinsk battery in Tomsk. In March 1918 second lieutenant Govorov was demobilized, so he returned to Yelabuga and began to work. But in October 1918 the town was captured be Kolchak army and Govorov was called up to serve in the “People`s Army of the Constituent Assembly”. But the interest of the white movement were alien to the son of a farmer and in autumn 1919 he with the soldiers of his battery ran away from his military unit and took an active part in the revolt against Kolchak and then joined the Red Army  in 1920 under the Red Banner.
