M.V. Lomonosov was born in a fisherman’s family, in the village of Denisovka near Kholmogory. The 19 th of November 1711 is his birthdate.

When he was 19, Lomonosov went on foot to Moscow.

He entered the Slavonic- Greek- Latin Academy. Here he studied Latin and mastered it in a short period of time. He was a brilliant pupil and in 1736 he was sent to Germany to continue his education.

In 1742 he returned to St. Petersburg. Four years later he was appointed professor and elected a member of the Academy.

A. Pushkin said about Lomonosov, “Lomonosov was a great man … He founded the first Russian university: or to express it more correctly he himself was our first university.”

M.V. Lomonosov made many important discoveries in different fields of science: physics, chemistry, astronomy.

Lomonosov’s activity was connected with his scientific investigations in navigation. He tried to find a short sea route from the West to the East through the Arctic Ocean.

M.V. Lomonosov wrote verses, odes and poems. He laid the basis for the scientific study of the Russian language, he wrote the first Russian grammar.

The great Russian critic V.G. Belinsky wrote, “Our literature begins with Lomonosov; he was its father and mother, he was its Peter the Great”.

M.V. Lomonosov revived the ancient art of stained glass mosaic in Russia, and he himself created several stained glass pictures.

In 1755 he founded the first Russian university in Moscow. Moscow University was named after its founder.

Every year scientific Lomonosov Readings are held in Arkhangelsk. Scholars from the best- known research centres of the country come to take part in them.

M. Lomonosov’s house- museum was set up in the village of Lomonosovo. It was opened in 1940 in the house of the Lomonosovs’ farmstead.

Monuments to him were erected in St. Petersburg.
