Цели:

  • повышение интереса и усиление мотивации у студентов к изучению английского языка;
  • развитие навыков теоретического мышления, развитие коммуникативных способностей;
  • стимулирование интеллектуальной и языковой активности, расширение лингвистического кругозора студентов;
  • совершенствование практического владения всеми видами речевой деятельности;
  • развитие творческих способностей студентов.

Задачи:

  • расширить, закрепить и систематизировать языковые знания и навыки;
  • создать условия для развития творческой, социально мобильной и конкурентоспособной личности, её самореализации и самоопределения;
  • создать положительную мотивацию к дальнейшему изучению английского языка и активному его использованию;
  • создать условия для повышения интереса обучающихся к изучению английского языка через разноплановость конкурсных заданий;
  • создать условия для повышения качества знаний в разных предметных областях;
  • раскрыть творческие способности студентов;
  • развить креативное мышление учащихся, навыки самостоятельной и творческой работы;
  • стимулировать потребность в использовании иностранного языка в различных ситуациях.

Содержательный компонент мероприятия

  1. Приветствие команд участниц
  2. Блиц-опрос
  3. Раунд “ Страноведческий экскурс ”
  4. “Кто это? Что это?”
  5. Раунд “Фольклорный”
  6. Конкурс капитанов команд в чтении скороговорок
  7. Раунд “Праздники”
  8. Известные личности
  9. Заключительный раунд
  10. Подведение итогов игры, выявление команд победителей.

Ход мероприятия

Тема игры объявляется заранее. Каждая команда готовит эмблему, название и представление участников, выбирается капитан. Приглашается жюри.

2 команды занимают места за своими столами. Выбирают капитана и название команды. Командам задаются вопросы. Отвечает та команда, капитан которой первый поднял руку. Ведется подсчет очков на доске. В конце игры подсчитываются баллы, подводятся итоги, торжественно награждаются победители.

1. Приветствие и организационный момент. Вступительное слово преподавателя.

  • Good morning, dear guests and participants! Today we are going to have a very special competition. Remember that the aim of the competition is not only to test your knowledge but to let you know more. You are going to have a quiz today devoted to English and English - speaking countries. During the game you will have to answer a lot of questions. I’d like you to pay attention to the most difficult and the most interesting questions as well as the easiest one. Also, each team will have to name the best player at the end of the game.
  • We’ve got two teams. And the first task is to give names to your teams. I give you two minutes to think about it, while I introduce our experts.

2. Блиц-опрос.

  • We got to know two teams. And now we move on to the second round. So, blitz polling. Team members are invited to answer the following questions. The team that raised its hand faster answers.

1) The largest of the US states? (Alaska)

2) The official languages in Canada? (English and French)

3) What is American traditional music? (country)

4) What is Ben Nevis? (a mountain)

5) Who was the 1st American president? (George Washington)

6) The number of states in the USA? (50)

7) Black Americans’ music style? (jazz)

8) How many royal parks are there in London? Can you name some of them. (They are 10. Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, St. James’s Park.)

9) What’s the colour of London’s taxies? (black)

3. Раунд «Страноведческий экскурс»

  • Wonderful! Our teams successfully cope with the tasks, the jury closely monitors the execution and calculates the points. And we move on to the third round. So, round the third "Regional geographic quiz". Teams answer 10 questions of a quiz over the English-speaking countries.
  1. What is the official name of the British flag? (Union Jack)
  2. What is the American flag called? (Stars and Stripes)
  3. What is the first of Shakespeare’s tragedies? (Romeo and Juliet)
  4. What is the capital of Australia? Canberra)
  5. What is the real name of Mark Twain? (Samuel Klemens)
  6. What is the financial part of London? (City of London)
  7. What is the floral symbol of Canada? (Maple leaf)
  8. What is the London home of the Queen? (Buckingham Palace)
  9. What do the Americans celebrate on the 4th of July? (Independence Day)
  10. What separates Great Britain from the continent? (English Channel)

4. “ Who is it? What is it?”

  • This assignment is that participants should guess what is in question as quickly as possible. For each correct answer, the team receives 2 points.

1. It’s a royal church. Here you can see the tombs of many British kings and queens and other famous people. This church is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. It is a large Gothic church in Westminster. Which church is it? (Westminster Abbey) 

2. This church is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. It was built by Sir Christopher Wren. Work on this church began in 1675. Nine years before the original church was destroyed in the Great Fire of London. Which church is it? (St Paul’s Cathedral)

3. This country is in the west of the UK. It is small. Its population is about 1 million and a half people. Much of the land is low-lying; there are green hills and low mountains. Which country is it? (Northern Ireland)

4. This is a part of Great Britain. It’s small, but larger than Northern Ireland. The highest mountain is Snowdon. The people there speak English and Welsh. The capital is Cardiff. Which country is it? (Wales)

5. This holiday is celebrated in spring. It is a religious holiday. In England presents traditionally take the form of an egg. They are usually made of chocolate. Sometimes they are hidden about the house for children to find them. Which holiday is it? (Easter)

6. On July 4, 1776, the American colonies declared their independence from Britain. Many families celebrate this holiday by having picnics and by watching fireworks at night. What holiday is this? (Independence Day)

7. This city is the largest in the USA. Its nickname is The Big Apple. This city is the world leader in business, arts and communications. It’s also the centre of advertising, fashion and publishing. Which city is it? (New York)

8. It was a gift to the USA from the people of France. It’s a great monument. But it is not only a monument; it is a symbol of freedom to millions of people around the world. What is it? (The Statue of Liberty)

5. Раунд “Фольклорный”

  •  And now we will provide the words of the jury and find out which team is breaking forward. (Слово предоставляется жюри). The team "…" breaks forward/The teams scored the same number of points. And we have the 5th round. It is called Folklore". Teams receive cards on which the English proverbs and sayings, and their Russian equivalents are presented. At first one team one after another reads in English, and at this time other teams have to find the Russian equivalent. For each correct answer – 1 point.

6. Конкурс капитанов

  • So it was the turn of our captains to stand up for the honor of their team. Team captains take turns to say tongue twisters (the speed and correctness of pronunciation are taken into account). During the captains competition, the rest of the team performs a task on the handout: to decorate the flag of the state of the UK.

7. «Праздники»

  • Information appears on the slides. The task of the teams is to guess what holiday is in question.
  1. On this holiday people send presents, flowers and greeting cards to their sweethearts, lovers, husbands and wives. – St. Valentine’s Day.
  2. This religious holiday marks the day when Jesus Christ rose from the dead. It is celebrated in March or in April. – Easter.
  3. On this national American holiday (in November) people thank God for good harvest and eat roast turkey, pumpkin and plum pudding. – Thanksgiving Day.
  4. On this holiday children put on strange masks, dress up as ghosts and witches and cry “Trick or Treat”. – Halloween.
  5. On this day in April people play tricks and jokes on their friends and relatives. – April Fool’s Day.

  • So we have a final assignment. The task will be read out for the two teams. Participants should guess the person in question as quickly as possible. For each correct answer, the team receives 2 points.

3. He was born in 1889. He was an English film actor and director. He appeared in black and white comedy films. He became a movie star at the beginning of the 20th century. Who was he? (Charlie Chaplin)   

4. He was an American artist and film producer. He was famous for his animated cartoons. In the 1950’s and 1960’s he began developing the family-entertainment parks Disneyland and Disney World. Who was he? (Walt Disney)

5. He was born in a very poor family and grew up to become the sixteenth President of the United States. When he was elected in 1860, the question of slavery was the foremost political issue. In 1863 he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, giving freedom to three million blacks living in the South. Who was he? (Abraham Lincoln) 

6. He was born in 1866. He is known for his science fiction. In 1920 he visited Moscow. During his long life he wrote about 40 novels and many short stories. His best-known works are “The Time Machine” and “The Invisible Man”. He died in 1946. Who was he? (Herbert Wells)

  • Our game has come to an end. While the jury calculates the points and determines the winner, we will listen to the song "Yesterday," performed....(Жюри подсчитывает баллы)
