Trafalgar Square It is in the centre of London. In the middle of the square stands a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument. There are two fountains in front of the National Gallery.

Tower of London It was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the King‘s Zoo. Now it is a museum. It was built by William the Conqueror in the eleventh century. There are always black ravens there and people believe that London will be rich while ravens live there.

Westminster Abbey It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. It was founded in 1050. Many English kings and queens are buried there. It is famous for its Poet’s Corner. Many great Englishmen were buried there: Newton, Darwin, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling and others.

Buckingham Palace It is the official London residence of the Queen. It was built in 1703. It has been a home of British kings and queens since 1837. Soldiers always guard the Palace. At half past eleven every morning they change guard.

Big Ben Big Ben is the name of the clock and the bell in the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. It is the biggest clock bell in London. The clock “Big Ben” came into service in 1859. The clock and the bell got their names after sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben.

The British Museum The British Museum is one of the most famous and important libraries in the world. It was founded in 1753. It has got about six million books. It has a wonderful art gallery, unique collections of sculpture, ceramics, drawings and paintings.

The National Gallery It is one of the best picture galleries in the world. It is situated in Trafalgar Square. It houses the national collection of Western European painting. It has more than 2000 pictures from the 13 th to the early 20 th century.

Saint Paul’s Cathedral The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17 th century after the Great Fire. It took him 35 years. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of its towers there is one of the largest bells in the world.

Hyde Park Hyde Park is a large park. Hundreds of years ago it was the forest with deer, bears and wild bulls. For centuries the Kings and Queens of England went there to hunt. Today people walk in the park or sit on the grass. Now it is famous for the Serpentine- the lake in the middle of Hyde Park.
