Good morning dear guests and students. Today is a special day. We are going to celebrate one religious and very famous holiday. Do you like holidays?

Teacher: ( Slide 2) St. Valentine’s Day – it is a very sentimental unofficial holiday which is celebrated on the 14th of February by those who believe in love and friendship. Boys and girls, husbands and wives, just friends send nice cards to each other with warm greetings on the day.

Teacher: (Slide 3)It’s high time to speak about the history of the holiday. Look please at the board. Here you can see the key words from the history of the holiday. These key words will help you to make up the whole story. Try please. Work in pairs. You have 3 minutes. (the Queen of Roman Goddesses and Gods, Juno, names in a jar, the Emperor, all marriages and engagements were canceled, married couples in secret,  jailers’ daughter, "From Your Valentine")

History of St. Valentine's Day

St Valentine's Day was supposedly started in the time of the Roman Empire. In Ancient Rome, the date of February 14 was a holiday to honor the Queen of Roman Goddesses and Gods, Juno. Juno was known as the Goddess of women and marriage. The next day February 15 was the first day of the Festival known as the Feast of Lupercia.

On February 14 is was said that the young boys and girls of the villages would write down the names of every girl and place these names in a jar of which each young man would have to draw a name of a girl and this particular maiden would be their partner for the duration of the festival. Sometimes these parings would last a year and end up in marriage.

These rituals under the laws of Claudius were banned as the Emperor believed that the reasons why men would now go to war were because they did not want to leave their lovers or families. As a result all marriages and engagements were canceled as a result Saint Valentine a Roman priest was said to have married these couples in secret and for this he was executed on the 14th day of February.

While St Valentine was in jail it is said that he fell in love with the jailers’ daughter. By a miracle or some say by the prayers of Valentine she gained her sight and as a last farewell in a note he was to "From Your Valentine".

Teacher: (Slide 5) There are a lot of traditions on this holiday. If you look at the board you will know about some of them. Do you know any other traditions?

Teacher: Students what do you have in your mind when I tell you the name of the holiday “St. Valentine’s Day”?

St: valentines, sweets, songs

Teacher: What are these words? – Symbols of the holiday. (Slide 4) St. Valentine’s Symbols. Now, you will have pictures and words. Your task is to match the symbols of the holiday with the words. (Heart, red rose, ribbons, lace, gloves, love knot, cupid, letters, cards, engagements and proposals, doves). You have to minutes.

Teacher: Well done! Who knows the meaning of these holiday’s symbols?

St.1: Heart. Emotions are feelings such as love, happiness, anger, or fear. A long time ago people believed that all the emotions were found in the heart. In later years they thought only the emotion of love was connected with the heart. The heart is still a symbol of love and because of this; it is also a symbol of Valentine’s Day.

St.2: Red Rose. The rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red is a color that stands for strong feelings. That is why the red rose is a flower of love.

St. 3: Ribbons. Ribbons go back to the days when ladies gave ribbons to their favorite knights when they went to war.

St.4: Lace. Lace comes from a Latin word; it means “to catch”. Lace was supposed to catch the heart of a loved one. Lace is a pretty fabric made by weaving together fine threads. Hundreds of years ago women carried lace handkerchiefs. A man nearby might pick it up and return it to her. Sometimes a woman might see a man she wanted to meet. She might drop her lace handkerchief on purpose to encourage romance. Soon people thought of romance when they thought of lace. They began using paper lace to decorate chocolate boxes and Valentine cards.

St. 5: Gloves. Years ago when a man proposed marriage to a woman he asked “for her hand”. The hand became the symbol of marriage and love. Soon gloves also became a symbol of love.

St. 6: Love birds and Doves. Lovebirds are colorful parrots found in Africa. Most have red bills.

They are called love birds because they sit closely together in pairs. Doves were thought to be favorite birds of Venus. They remain with the same mates all their lives. The males and females both care for their babies. As these birds are symbols of loyalty and love they are also symbols of Valentine’s Day.

Teacher: Well done! Tell me please what is the most famous symbol of the holiday? St. 8: Cupid. (Slide 5) Son of Venus, goddess of love. He could cause people to fall in love by piercing them with one of his magic arrows.

Teacher: Different games are very popular at Valentine parties. Now let’s play special games!

The rose is red, the violet is blue,

Lilies are fair and so are you!

The sky is high, the sea is deep.

Thinking of you I cannot sleep.

If you love me I love you

Nothing but death will part us too.

Here’s special valentine
With lots of love for you
And since you’re very special
Here are hugs and kisses, too!

Love, love me do,
You know I love you,
I’ll always be true,
So please, love me do.

STEVIE WONDER

"I Just Called To Say I Love You"

No New Year's Day to celebrate
No
chocolate covered candy hearts to give away
No first of spring
No song to sing
In fact here's just
another ordinary day

No April rain
No flowers
bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June
But what it is, is something true
Made up of these three words that I must
say to you

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it
from the bottom of my heart

No summer's high
No warm July
No harvest moon to light one tender
August night
No autumn breeze
No falling leaves
Not even time for birds to fly to southern skies

No Libra sun
No
Halloween
No giving thanks to all the Christmas joy you bring
But what it is, though old so new
To fill your heart like no three words could ever do

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart, of my heart,
of my heart
