Easter - Light Christ's Sunday is the most important orthodox (православный) holiday in Russia . This day is special and familiar to us since the childhood . We know it by painted eggs , tasty smelling Easter cakes covered with a multi-coloured crumbs on white glaze . 1

Easter is a feast that is not always held on the same time each year. Easter Day is celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox.

EASTER IS A CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY CELEBRATING THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST ON THE THIRD DAY AFTER HIS CRUCIFIXION.

EASTER IS PRECEDED BY LENT , A PERIOD OF FASTING AND PENITENCE IN PREPARATION FOR EASTER, WHICH BEGINS ON ASH WEDNESDAY( ПЕПЕЛЬНАЯ СРЕДА - ПЕРВЫЙ ДЕНЬ ВЕЛИКОГО ПОСТА ) AND LASTS FORTY DAYS (NOT COUNTING SUNDAYS).

The legend tells us that Maria Magdalina presented the first Easter egg to the Roman emperor Tiberiju . According to the legend Maria was poor and , without having anything , except the belief , joyfully exclaimed : “ Christ Revived !”. The emperor was skeptical about her words and doubted that someone can revive from the dead . “ It is difficult to believe in it , as that this egg can become red !”- the emperor answered . He did not believe his eyes when the egg in his hands became_scarlet_ . 5

Since then traditional red Easter eggs symbolize blood of the Christ. For children Easter eggs is an occasion to play on breaking eggs.

On Saturday believers bring Easter cakes , eggs in the church . These things are consecrated by priests . Without consecration they lose the symbolical value . 7

On Easter people kiss each other with the words “The Christ Revived!” and with the answer “Truly Revived” and exchange with Easter eggs.

IN ENGLAND IT'S A TIME FOR GIVING AND RECEIVING PRESENTS, MOSTLY EASTER EGGS. THE EGG IS THE MOST POPULAR EMBLEM OF EASTER. NOWADAYS THERE ARE A LOT OF CHOCOLATE EASTER EGGS WITH SMALL GIFTS INSIDE. BUT A REAL HARD-BOILED EGG, DECORATED AND PAINTED STILL APPEARS AT BREAKFAST TABLES ON EASTER DAY. IT IS A TRADITION IN ENGLAND TO HIDE ( ПРЯТАТЬ ) EGGS IN THE HOUSE OR IN GARDEN FOR CHILDREN TO FIND. THEY SAY THAT ESTER RABBIT HIDES THEM.

Egg-rolling is an Easter traditional pastime. You roll the eggs until they are cracked and broken, after they are eaten up.
