Цели: научить учащихся работать с информацией, анализировать информацию, делать выводы; подвести итоги работы над темой «Environment and Ecology»; тренировать учащихся в обсуждении проблемы, углубить их экологические знания на региональном уровне, способствовать формированию умений учиться самостоятельно, пробуждению у них чувства ответственности за сохранение и целостности окружающей среды; чувства уважения и любви к родной природе. Развивать навыки аудирования, говорения, чтения.

Тема:  Окружающая среда и экология.

Тип и вид урока: развитие речевых умений, монологической речи и аудирования.

Форма урока: защита проектов по теме «Окружающая среда и экология»

Цели: научить учащихся работать с информацией, анализировать информацию, делать выводы; подвести итоги работы над темой «Environment and Ecology»; тренировать учащихся в обсуждении проблемы, углубить их экологические знания на региональном уровне, способствовать формированию умений учиться самостоятельно, пробуждению у них чувства ответственности за сохранение и целостности окружающей среды; чувства уважения и любви к родной природе.

Развивать навыки аудирования, говорения, чтения.

Оснащение урока: интерактивная доска, проекты учащихся, газетные вырезки, фотографии, компьютер, CD

                                                Ход урока

Teacher: Good-afternoon, dear friends. Today we are going to have a talk and discuss the problems of environment protection, because it is one of the main problems of today. We’ll try to answer the next questions:

  • What is an environment?
  • What does our environment look like?
  • Are there any environmental problems in our republic, region?
  • What do our local authorities do to protect our environment? Are any new laws passed to protect the environment?
  • What does our school do to protect the environment? Do you have an environmental program in your school?
  • Are there any environmental groups, organizations or projects in our village?
  • Do your neighbours try to keep their surrounding area tidy?
  • How do your fellow citizens protect nature when they spend their weekends in the countryside?

Before we start discussing these problems let’s repeat the words and expressions (фонетическая зарядка проводится при помощи интерактивной доски на которой написаны слова и выражения для повторения) and translate them into English

Thank you. It was well done. Now let’s begin our discussion. The first point is- what an environment is.

Pupil 1: Everything around us makes up our environment. Air, water, land, soil, buildings, people, plants, animals and weather are all parts of our environment. In other words, we are part of the earth together with everything that surrounds us. Human beings are the wisest and strongest creatures on the Earth and that’s why

They are responsible for everything that surrounds them. Man can’t exist in unhealthy environment.

Teacher: Good. Thank you. But what does our environment look like?

Pupil 2: Technological progress improves people’s lives, but at the same time it causes numerous problems. Through their daily activities people pollute land, water and air. As we have learned from the text «Pollution Solution» both the atmosphere of the Earth and the depths of the oceans are poisoned with toxic wastes created by the humans. Millions of species- animals, birds, fish have already disappeared from our planet. Big cities face the environmental catastrophe. More and more factories, cars and trucks add their bad breath to the air. Pollution of water by both industrial and domestic users creates the problem of water deficit. One form of pollution of large cities is noise that has destructive influence on a person’s mind. Litter is another problem.

Teacher: But it would be naïve to think that the environmental problems are limited to big cities only. The third item of our discussion is “Are there any environmental problems in our republic?”

Project 1 “Environmental problems of my Republic”.

 Every year plants and factories pollute atmosphere with harmful substances and not only they, but cars too. In such cities as Belebei and Birsk cars are the main source of atmosphere pollution. Poor air quality influences the people’s health, because they breathe polluted air. But there is a law and the cars are tested for bad breath and the drivers are punished. Bashkortostan is an industrial republic Machine-building, oil-refining, petrochemical, chemical and microbiological industries are developed in our Republic. Unfortunately, as the head physician of the Republic Cancer Centre Vladimir Ruchkin said they cause heart diseases, cancer, asthma.60 000 people have cancer in Bashkortostan.

Another problem is water pollution. Often companies dump chemical wastes into water. For example, I have an article from the newspaper “Arguments and Facts” from August 30, 2008 in Blagoveshchensk district an unknown company threw out polluting substances into the Agidel river. And it isn’t a single case.

But the Institute of Biology and the Institute of Ecology carry out projects to study and protect the environment. Ufa scientists learned to establish the factories which throw their wastes into water by water testing. Even the chairman of the Ecology Committee of the Russian Federation Vladimir Grachev admitted the great achievements of Bashkir scientists. Here is an article about it. Teacher: Thank you for your work. It was well done. Where did you find the information?

Pupil: We look through different newspapers.

Teacher: Do you know that every ten minutes one kind of animals disappears. If nothing is done about it over one million species will disappear in 20 years. What animals are in danger in our country? Some of you tried to find information about it. Share it with your classmates, please.

Project 2 “Animals and birds are in danger.”

The forests are in danger. The world has over nine million square kilometers of forests, but they are disappearing fast not only because of fires. Every day we use paper made of wood, and a lot of forests are cleared for different uses. Here is an article from the newspaper “The Republic of Bashkortostan” from September, 5 2008 about logging “26 cubical meters of wood was confiscated by local environmental regulatory agency.” Tourism also causes great problem. People like to spend their free time in the countryside. And so we must protect the wildlife, plants and trees. We must take our litter home, we mustn’t catch birds, paint trees, pick wild flowers. Animals and birds are in danger. If trees are damaged, flowers and grass are cut, birds and animals may become extinct. We make the Red book of Bashkortostan. This book contains rear species of birds and animals of our republic.

Teacher: I see. Can you name these birds and animals in Russian?

Teacher: Thank you for your work. Are there any ecological problems in our village?

Project 3 “Ecology of my village.”

There are some ecological problems in our village too. Our small river Saru was a large and wide river, but now it is shallow and dirty. The wastes from our local hospital polluted it. Besides some drivers wash their cars by the river and harm it.

One more problem is the problem of rubbish. Every year each family creates one ton of rubbish. We throw away too much and in wrong places. We fill the world with rubbish. For example, we can see a lot of litter, plastic bottles, papers everywhere. We think that local environmental regulatory agency has to take measures against illegal dumping.

Teacher: But there are a lot of people all over the world that are concerned about the ecology. They think of how to protect the environment, to help the Earth and they join various voluntary organizations. Look at the board, please, and match the names of the voluntary organizations and the ways they help.

Teacher: Now tell me what our local authorities do to protect the environment. Are there any new laws passed?

Project 4 “We must help our environment”

 Our government carries out different environmental programs, passes laws such as the Cleaning Air Act, Water Pollution Control Act, Endangered Species Act. It involves businessmen in environmental decision-making and problem solving. So the first Congress of businessmen of our Republic held in Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan. They discussed ecological problems of our Republic and looked for the instruments for regulating these problems. Besides the Department of Natural Resources of the Republic of Bashkortostan together with the schoolchildren planted trees in Ufa. The State Youth Committee of the Republic of Bashkortostan together with the mobile company “MegaPhone” held ecological subbotnic. Even Servicemen share environmental concerns. The first conference of military ecologists of the Russian Federation took place in Ufa last year. They discussed various environmental careers.

Pupils of our school held subbotnics. We clean pavements, parks of our village, planted trees. We are proud of our classmates who made some birdfeeders this winter and filled them with food.

Teacher: You are right. By the way do you know that June, 5 is proclaimed the World Environmental Day by the UNO and it is celebrated every year. Say what people can and must do to protect the environment.

Project 5: We want to suggest you some important rules to protect the environment. We designed posters telling people about ecological problems of the day and you task it to guess what these posters are telling about.

(Учащиеся показывают нарисованные ими плакаты призывающие к охране окружающей среды. Задача остальных учащихся  угадать о чем эти рисунки и назвать).

Teacher: The list of serious environmental problems could be continued, and we invite you all to take part in environmental actions to keep our village and republic fit for living. Let’s finish our lesson with the poem by L. Khusainova “Oh, Russia, I’m in love with you!” Open your books on page 341. Listen to the poem, be ready to read and translate.
