Everglades National Park

Слайд 2

Everglades National Park is an American national park that protects the southern twenty percent of the original Everglades in Florida. The park is the largest tropical wilderness in the United States and the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River. An average of one million people visit the park each yearEverglades is the third-largest national park in the contiguous United States after Death Valley and Yellowstone. UNESCO declared. the Everglades & Dry Tortugas Biosphere Reserve in 1976 and listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1979, and the Ramsar Convention included the park on its list of Wetlands of International Importance in 1987. Everglades is one of only three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.

Most national parks preserve unique geographic features; Everglades National Park was the first created to protect a fragile ecosystem. The Everglades are a network of wetlands and forests fed by a river flowing 0.25 miles (0.40 km) per day out of Lake Okeechobee, southwest into Florida Bay.[7] The park is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America and contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere.Thirty -six threatened or protected species inhabit the park, including the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee, along with 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles.[9] The majority of South Florida's fresh wat e r, which is stored in the Biscayne Aquifer, is recharged in the park.

The Everglades National Park is home to 22 and 16 endangered species of plants and animals that are protected by the Endangered Species Act. Many of these species, such as the common manatee, the sharp-winged crocodile and the butterfly Anaea troglodyta , have critical habitats inside the park. In addition, about 180 species of plants and animals in the Everglades are listed by the State of Florida as endangered, species of special concern, or commercially exploited

The Everglades is the largest federally protected wildlife area in the eastern United States. In addition to being one of the largest wetlands in the world, Everglades National Park also boasts some of the largest protected areas in the National Wildlife Conservation System east of the Rocky Mountains. Known as Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Wilderness (named after the conservationist largely responsible for preserving the Everglades), the federal wildlife occupies 520,000 hectares in Everglades National Park .

T he region was first settled in 1000 BC. Before the arrival of Spanish explorers in the early 16th century, the area that eventually became the Everglades National Park was mostly inhabited by the Calusa tribe. By the 1700s, most of the Calusa population had died from diseases brought by settlers, leaving behind many traces of their society, including shell tools, carved wood, and canoe trails. (3) The Everglades survived the survival efforts of the first colonizers in the 1800s and the development of coastal areas in the 1900s before attracting the attention of conservationists such as the Florida Federation of Women's Clubs and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
