Scene I

(At the wall)

Humpty Dumpty is on the wall. He doesn't notice Alice.

Alice  Oh! It's Humpty Dumpty. It can't be anybody else! I read all about him in a book. I am afraid, he will fall. (She is standing with her hands ready to catch him) 

He looks very much like an egg.

Humpty Dumpty Why do you call me an egg? I don't like it. (Humpty dumpty says looking away from Alice)

Alice  I do not say you are an egg, sir. I only say that  you look like an egg. And some eggs are very pretty, you know.

Humpty Dumpty  Some people are very silly. They are like babies. (Humpty Dumpty is looking at the tree)

Alice  If  he is talking to me, why is he  looking at the tree and not at me?

He is so strange. Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great  fall....

Humpty Dumpty   Don't stand and chat to yourself.  What is your name and why did you come here?

Alice  My name is Alice...

Humpty Dumpty What a stupid name! What does it mean?

Alice Must a name mean something?

Humpty dumpty Of course it must. My name means that my face is beautiful, and my body is beautiful too. What does your name mean? Nothing.

Alice Why do you sit out here alone?

Humpty Dumpty Because there's nobody with me! Did you think I didn't know the answer to that? Ask another.

Alice  Are you not afraid to sit there? That wall is so narrow!

Humpty Dumpty I am not afraid. Now, take a good look at me! If I fall, the King...

Alice    Yes, yes, I know. The King will send  all his horses and all his men

Humpty Dumpty  Yes, all his horses and all his men. They'd pick me up again in a minute. But how do you know about the King's horses and king's men? I am sure you like to listen at doors and behind trees.

Alice    No, no, no! I didn't listen at doors and behind trees. I read about it in a book.

Scene II

Alice, Humpty Dumpty at the wall. Enter Chorus (with horses and swords) dressed up  like the cards)

Together

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the King's horses and all the King's men

Couldn't put Humpty together again.

Exit
