1. Read the text.

1. The whole of this family-the six grown-ups and little Charlie Bucket live together in a small wooden house on the edge ( на окраине ) of a great town.

The house wasn’t large enough for so many people and life was extremely  ( чрезвычайно ) uncomfortable for them all. There were only two rooms in the place, and there was only one bed.

2. The bed was given ( была отдана ) to the four old grandparents because they were old and tired. They were so tired; they never got out of it. Grandpa Joe and Grandma Josephine on this side, and Grandpa George and Grandma Georgina on this side.
3. Mr. and Mrs. Bucket and Charlie Bucket slept in other room, upon mattresses on the floor. In the summertime, this wasn’t too bad, but in the winter , freezing cold draughts (сквозняки ) blew across the floor all night long, and it was awful. They were not able to buy a better house or even one more bed. They were very poor for that.
4. Mr. Bucket was the only person in the family with a job. He worked in the toothpaste factory, where he screwed ( прикручивал ) the little caps            ( крышки ) on the tops of the tubes of the toothpaste all day long. But a toothpaste cap screwer ( тот, чьей работой является прикручивание крышек ) never gets very much money. Poor Mr. Bucket worked hard, but he was not able to make enough money to buy the things that the large family needed.
5. There wasn’t even enough money to buy proper food for all of them. The only meals they could have were bread and margarine for breakfast, potatoes and cabbage for lunch, and cabbadge soup for supper. Sunday were a bit better. They all looked forward to Sundays because then everyone was allowed a second helping (добавка ).
