She is one of the most famous rulers of England, reigned during the times of Shakespeare and the Spanish Armada - Elizabeth I. She reigned as Queen of England from 17 November 1558 to 24 March 1603. Her reign is sometimes referred to as the Elisabeth era, and it was the era of William Shakespeare’s plays, Sir Francis Drake’s travels to America, and the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

Elizabeth was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn. She was born a princess, but lost this status when Henry decided to execute Anna when Elizabeth was just over two and a half years old. After that, and until she was a «princess», she was Lady Elizabeth.

Elizabeth’s journey to become Queen of England was not an easy one. Henry had a son named Edward and an older daughter named Mary. When Henry died in 1547, Edward became Edward VI, but he died in 1553, after Mary assumed the role of queen. Queen Mary I died on 17 November 1558 and, after Elizabeth, became Queen Elizabeth I of England.

Queen Elizabeth was never married and never had children. For this reason she is sometimes called «Queen of the Virgin». As she had no children, there was no heir to the throne in her family line, so the title belonged to James VI of Scotland.

Elizabeth was born on 7 September 1533 and became queen at the age of 25. She ruled for 44 years and 127 days. Elisabeth could understand several languages: English, Latin, Greek, Italian, French, Spanish, Welsh, and apparently even Cornish, a language that is now spoken by only about 2,000 people in Cornwall. Queen Elizabeth I was portrayed more often in film and television than any other British monarch.
