Teacher: Good morning, my friends. Your homework for today’s lesson was to work in groups and to make a project “Welcome to Bashkortostan”. I hope you were friendly and helpful while you were working on this project. And I hope the results will be excellent. You should be very attentive today and at the end of the lesson you will have to fill in the blanks in the “Sightseeing” quiz.

Every year a lot of people visit our republic. Ufa is the capital of Bashkortostan. Our city is fantastic. Imagine that one group of British tourists is in Ufa and Oktyabrsky for the first time. They want to see famous sights of our cities.

This gentleman is a group leader (GL). And that one is a correspondent (C). He always asks many questions. These ladies and gentlemen are guides (G) from Ufa, Oktyabrsky Tourist Information offices. This gentleman is a head (H) of the office. And I am in English tourist too. And you should present your project. I think we’ll start with a visit to the Tourist Information Office. Let’s begin.

Разговор между представителем группы и директором.

GL: Good morning!

H: Good morning. Can I help you?

GL: I am the leader of a group of British tourists. We are in your republic for the first time and we would like to see some cities and towns what could you suggest?

H: I can suggest a bus-tour about Ufa and Oktyabrsky.

GL: Oh, thank you. I think it is the best way of travelling.

H: Here you can also see some leaflets about the most famous Ufa, Oktyabrsky sights.

GL: Thanks a lot.

Teacher: Our excursion starts.

Guide: Dear guests! As you know Ufa is the capital of Bashkortostan. Ufa is situated on the banks of the Agithel and Karaithel rivers. It is a political, economic and cultural center of our republic.

Ufa was founded as a fortress by a detachment of Russian archers in 1574.

In 1922 Ufa became the capital of the Bashkir autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Russian Federation. Ufa today is industrial, agricultural, scientific, cultural center. Its population is over 1,100000 people. The population of Bashkortostan is 4 million people. Bashkortostan’s national flag has three stripes on it. The stripes are blue, white and green. The blue color means honesty and devotion. The Bashkir people were always devoted to their friends, families and to the country. The white color means nobleness. The green color means the Earth, freedom and wisdom.

There is a golden emblem – the flower of the kurai in the center of white stripe. The flower of the kurai is a symbol of friendship.

The landscape of our republic is picturesque. In the east the hilly forest-steppe with its black-earth ploughed fields, lime groves and clear rivers give way to forest covered mountains, rich in various ores Bashkortostan is rich in beautiful lakes. They are Kandra kul, Asly kul.

G: Well see Kandra kul when we visit Oktyabrsky. It’s the largest and deepest lakes. There are many caves in Bashkortostan. The Shulgan Tash cave is one of the famous ancient caves.

G2: Ladies and gentlemen! I’d like to draw your attention to the streets of our city. Our city is famous for its straight and wide streets, beautiful parks, museums. By the way there is famous Nesterov’s State museum here. You can see wonderful masterpieces and sculptures there. We can admire with the works of Nesterov, Levitanov, Tropinin there. There are many theaters, the Opera and the Ballet Theater.

By the way we are near the Bashkir State Academic Theatre of Drama. The Republic has seven Bashkir, four Russian and two Tatar state Drama Theatres.

One of the most popular performance in 1990 years was “Red Pasha”. This year our republic celebrated 120th jubilee of Karim Khakimov, the main hero of this performance. His name is famous all over the world. He was the first soviet diplomat, was born on the 28th of November 1982 in the country Dusyanovo Bashkortostan. Karim Abduraufovich was the first ambassador of Soviet Russia in Arabic countries. He took an active part in the building of the new and became a close friend of today’s ruling dynasty of Abdel Aziz ibn Saud; he won trust of common people of Arabian Peninsula. Repressions in attitude to “Read Pasha” made a great impression on the representatives were interrupted and renewed only nowadays.

The performance devoted to Karim Khakimov’s life was staged in 1982. An Honoured Artist Ahtyam Abushahmanov acted the role of Pasha. It had a great success in our republic and abroad. There is a street named after Karim Khakimov in Ufa.

G1: Your impressions won’t be great if we don’t tell about our second well-known country-man Rudolf Khamitovich Nureyev. The Bashkir School of Dance is well respected with many students receiving international awards at competitions in Russia and other countries. Rudolf Nureyev as a child was encouraged to dance in Bashkir folk performances and began his career in Ufa.

The history of our republic is closely connected with the name of our poet and writer Mustai Karim. Since childhood we know his poem:

“Not Russian, I was born on Russian soil,

And now I speak my mind, being strong and free,

I drank the waters of Great Russian Rivers,

And grew up sturdy as the green oak-tree…”

He was born on the 20th of October, 1919 in the village of Klash of Shisma district of the Bashkir ASSR.

He graduated from Institute in 1941. He took part in the Great Patriotic War. After the war he returned to Ufa and began his active literary work. His plays “The Wedding is going on”, “Aigul”, “Mother” and “Blue Shawl” and many others  are well known to the spectators. His plays became a golden find of the Bashkir dramatic composition.

T: Not so long ago I heard music written by Rim Khasanov. If I am not mistaken he is from Bashkortostan too.

G: It is very pleasant for us to hear about it. You are right. He is a Bashkir soviet composer. He was born on the 9th of March, 1947bin country Yazykovo, Blagovar district. He is a well-known composer in our republic and abroad too. He wrote about 30 songs to Ron Rojer’s poems. In 2006 he gave a concert with great success in Finland. He wrote music to 70 performances.

G1: Dear guests. Our tour in Ufa is over. Now let’s go to see other interesting places of our republic. I advise you to visit Oktyabrsky.

C: Excuse me. May I ask you a question?

G: Yes, sure

C: It’s very interesting for me. What is this town famous for?

G: Not so long ago we visited this beautiful, quiet town. It is called “the second Petersburg”. Our trip was connected with the 65th anniversary of the town. It is the fifth city in the republic. It’s located in West of our republic. Its population is about 110.000 people. It is surrounded with the forest, mountains and river.  It is an industrial center too. Tourists like to visit Oktyabrsky; it is famous for its unusual architecture. One of the most attractive places is the old pant of our town. There are a lot of places, cinemas. It’s one of the most well organized cities of republic. Our town mainly concentrated on the extraction and refining of oil which was first prospected here in the thirties. New districts with more modern streets and buildings encircle the town. Oktyabrsky is famous for its people. Anisim Shokurov is known to everybody, he was a founder of the museum. A lot of people go in for sport, so we have the Palace of Sport.

Our town is known with its musicians and composers too.

G2: Dear guests. Our town has finished. I hope you have enjoyed our tour of Ufa, Oktyabrsky.
