London London is the capital of UK. It’s one of the biggest and most beautiful cities in the world. It is about 1000 years old. London’s population is 8 million. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. The heart of London is the City. Westminster is the historical and governmental part. The West End is the richest part of London, while East End is the poorest. And now we’ll have an excursion to London.

Tower Bridge Tower bridge is one of the symbols of London It was built in1894 The bridge is situated near the Tower, that’s why it is called so Nowadays Tower bridge is a museum

Trafalgar Square Trafalgar square is the centre of London. Some people think it’s the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of the square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson, who won the Battle of Trafalgar during the war with Napoleon. There are usually a lot of pigeons in the Square. Two largest London’s museums – National Gallery and The British museum are also situated on the Trafalgar Square.

Westminster Abbey Westminster Abbey is the historical part of London. This church is about 900 years old. All english queens and kings have been crowned in Westminster. Many famous english scientists, painters, poets are buried here: Newton, Darwin, Dickens, Kipling....

The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben

Near the Westminster Abbey is Westminster palace or the Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British Parliament. The clock tower of the Houses of Parliament is famous for it’s big hour Bell known as Big Ben. You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London. The clock got this name after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man and his nickname was Big Ben.

Buckingham palace is the official residence of the queen. The palace was built in the 1702 by the Duke of Buckingham. And in 1837 it became the official residence of the British monarchs. Every morning you can watch the Change of Guard . They are wearing high fur hats made of bear’s skin

The Tower

The Tower of London is one of the most famous historical buildings in the world. It was founded by William I of England better known as William the Conqueror in 1066-87.There are 21 towers in Tower ( White Tower, Bloody Tower, Clock tower...). The Tower was used as a fortress, a palace, and a prison (some english queens and kings were executed there). Now it’s a museum. Tower is also known as a place where royal jewels are hold. In crown jewels you can see the crowns of english kings and queens

Tower is famous for its guard. The guardians are called Yeoman Warders but they are also known as Beefeaters. Since ancient times there live ravens in Tower. It is not clear at what point in history the ravens became an accepted occupant of the Tower of London but there seems to be evidence dating back to King Charles 11 during the seventeenth century. King was told a legend that without the ravens the Tower, the monarchy and indeed the kingdom itself would fall. And since that time ravens live in London. Nowadays 8 ravens live in Tower, 5 “boys” and 3 “girls”. Their names are: Larry, Cedric, Munin, Odin.......
