3. Answer the following questions:

1) Why was Lady Windemere’s house full of guests? Who was present at her last reception before Christmas?

2) Who visited Lady Windemere twice a week? Why?

3) What was going to happen to Lady Windemere next year according to the cheiromantist?

4) What kind of a person was the cheiromantist?

5) What did Mr. Podgers say about the Duchess of Paisley? Was he right or mistaken?

6) What did Mr. Podgers read from Lady Flora’s hand?

7) What was Sir Thomas like in accordance with the cheiromantist?

8) What did Mr. Podgers say about Lady Marvel?

9) What information did Lady Windemere give about Lord Arthur Savile?

10) What did Mr. Podgers tell about Lord Arthur?

11) What did Lord Arthur feel after the cheiromantist’s words?

12) Where did Lord Arthur spend the night?

4. Prove that:

1) Lady Windemere was a charming woman.

2) Lady Windemere believed in cheiromancy.

3) Mr. Podgers didn’t look like a real cheiromantist.

4) Mr. Podgers was a successful cheiromantist.

5) Lord Arthur loved Sybil.

6) Mr. Podgers was frightened when he saw Lord Arthur’s hand.

7) Some people wanted to have their hands read but the others didn’t.

8) Lord Arthur believed Mr. Podgers.

5) Write out some keywords from the chapter and use them while retelling the chapter.

Chapter 2.

1. Find these words and word-combinations in the text, explain them in English and make up your own sentences with them

2. Find in the chapter 10 adjectives with the negative meaning and 10 adjectives with the positive meaning. Learn them by heart.

3. Choose the right sentences about the characters of the story and correct the false ones.

1) Lord Arthur decided not to marry Sybil after he had been told his fortune.

2) Lord Arthur was a born criminal and any murder was nothing to him.

3) He decided to kill his relative feeling no regret.

4) Lord Arthur decided to poison Lady Clem because he was expert on toxicology.

5) Lord Arthur was a shy man who hated painful scenes.

6) Lord Arthur had a big angry dog.

7) Lord Arthur brought a new American medicine for heartburn to Lady Clem.

8) When Lord Arthur was in Italy, he was afraid that some accident had happened to Lady Clem.

2. Find in the chapter the English equivalents to the following Russian word-combinations:

4. Enlarge the following statements:
