Furthermore it shows their identity as a nation and their being and becoming -- their history, traditions plus the things they give importance to. National symbols and emblems are part of the rich legacy of a country as a whole .

Слайд 4

One of the main symbols of the UK is the flag of the United Kingdom, which is known as the Union Jack. It is made up of three crosses: the cross of St George (the patron saint of England), the cross of St Andrew (the patron saint of Scotland), the cross of St Patrick (the patron saint of Ireland).

The patron saint of England is the dragon-slaying St George . His emblem is a red cross on white, St George cross. The Legend says the dragon makes his nest by a city’s only spring. Each day in exchange for water the citizens bring the dragon a sheep, or a goat, or a calf… . Soon there is no livestock left in the city. Day and night the dragon guards the well and the city is dying of thirst. Finally the citizens decide to offer a young girl a day to the dragon. At last king’s daughter is chosen to go to the dragon … . St George steps in front of the girl and faces the beast. So St George saved the city and the princess. As patron saint of England, St George is thought to protect the kingdom, the monarch and the people

The national bird of the UK is Robin

Слайд 8

The red rose is the national emblem of England The floral symbol of England is the red rose. Earlier, it decorated the arms of the House of Lancaster. The Lancastrians argued for the throne of England with the Yorkists whose arms had a white rose. The war for the throne between the Lancastrians and Yorkists became known in the history of the country as the War of the Red and White Rose. It lasted 30 years (1455-1485). When the Lancastrians won the war, their arms of the Red Rose became the symbol of the whole England.

Слайд 10

Part of their symbols and emblems of Ireland are: shamrock, harp, leprechaun, national games -- hurling and Gaelic football, music, dances and food and beverages.

Слайд 11

The favourite colour of the Irish is green The symbol of Ireland is Shamrock

Слайд 12

The National Emblem of Northern Ireland The shamrock is the symbol of Northern Ireland. It is also connected to St. Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick is most famous for bringing Christianity to Ireland. The legend tells how he used the shamrock, a kind of a white clover with three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity. Apparently, he used it to show how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist as separate elements of the same entity. Father Son Holy Spirit

Слайд 13

The red hand is also a symbol of Northern Ireland. The Red Hand is in its flag. According to the myth, there was time when the heir to the throne of Ireland was undecided. And they decided to hold a boat-race and the winner (the first who would reach the shore of Ulster) would be the king. One competitor so much desired the country that when he saw that he was loosing the race, he cut his hand, threw it to the shore and won. The hand is most likely red because it was covered with blood.

Слайд 14

A leprechaun is a kind of a “fairy‘ in Irish folklore --he looks like a small, old man about 2 feet tall. He is often dressed like a shoemaker, with a crooked hat and a leather apron it is an old man wearing red or green coat and is always doing mischief. It is smaller than a small child Leprechaun The name leprechaun comes from the old Irish word " luchorpan " which means "little body."

Слайд 15

According to legend, leprechauns are aloof and unfriendly. They live alone, and pass the time making shoes. They also have a hidden pot of gold! Treasure hunters can often track down a leprechaun by the sound of his shoemaker's hammer. If the leprechaun is caught, he can be threatened with bodily violence to tell where his treasure is, but the leprechaun's captors must keep their eyes on him every second. If the captor's eyes leave the leprechaun - he's known to trick them into looking away - he vanishes and all hopes of finding the treasure are lost.

Слайд 16

The Symbol of the Irish Harp The harp has long been a symbol of Ireland. Perhaps the legends of it's magical powers comes from the time when the bards would sing and tell stories of famous events to the Irish kings and chiefs. During the early 1500s, under the rule of Henry VIII, the harp was first depicted on Irish coins. That tradition is carried on today and the harp is also used for other official duties such as the Irish state seal, official documents and uniforms.

The Flag of Wales incorporates the red dragon, now a popular Welsh symbol, along with the Tudor colours of green and white. It was used by Henry VII at the battle of Bosworth in 1485 after which it was carried in state to St. Paul's Cathedral. The red dragon was then included in the Tudor royal arms to signify their Welsh descent. It was officially recognized as the Welsh national flag in 1959. The British Union Flag incorporates the flags of Scotland, Ireland and England but does not have any Welsh representation. Technically, however, it is represented by the flag of England due to the Laws in Wales act of 1535 which annexed Wales following the 13th century conquest

Слайд 18

Saint David, Welsh Dewi (born c. 520,—died c. 600, feast day March 1), patron saint of Wales.

Слайд 19

The Welsh symbol is a vegetable called the Leek (or, on occasion, the flower, the daffodil). The patron saint of Wales, David, ate only leeks and bread. In memory of this Christian Saint, the leek became the symbol of Wales. Daffodils which burst into flames by the 1st of March celebrate the revered Welsh saint.

Слайд 20

The daffodil is the national flower of Wales, and is worn on St David's Day each 1 March. (In Welsh, the daffodil is known as "Peter's Leek" The leek is also a national emblem of Wales. According to legend, Saint David ordered his Welsh soldiers to identify themselves by wearing the vegetable on their helmets in an ancient battle against the Saxons that took place in a leek field. It is still worn on St David's Day each 1 March

Слайд 21

The national flag of Scotland, St. Andrew's Cross, dates (at least in legend) from the 9th century, and is thus the oldest national flag still in use. St. Andrew's Cross now also forms part of the design of the Union Jack.

Слайд 22

On the morning of battle white clouds forming an X shape in the sky were said to have appeared. The legend states that he was heavily outnumbered and hence whilst engaged in prayer on the eve of battle, Óengus II vowed that if granted victory he would appoint Saint Andrew as the Patron Saint of Scotland About the middle of the 10th century, Andrew became the patron saint of Scotland St Andrew's Day, the 30 November, is the national day with the St. Andrew's Day Bank Holiday (Scotland)

Слайд 24

The people of the country chose the thistle as their national emblem because it saved their land from foreign invaders many years ago. People say that during a surprise night attack by the invaders the Scottish soldiers were awakened by the shouts of the invaders as their bare feet touched the thorns of the thistles in the field they were crossing. This, of course, was a good reason to choose the thistle as a national emblem!

Слайд 25

One of the things that people associate with Scotland is the kilt. The kilt is a relic of the time when the clan had the same family name, like MacDonald or MacGregor . (Mac means ‘son of) The clan had its own territory and was ruled by a chieftain. Each clan had its own tartan.

Слайд 26

Bagpipes can be seen and heard in Scotland. They were first recorded in the 16 th century during the reign of James I, who was a very good player, and probably did much to make it popular. For long a bagpipe has considered a national Scottish instrument
