Задачи урока: развивать навыки чтения и аудирования по теме The Story of Jeans, ознакомить учащихся с НЛЕ по теме, активизировать ее в устной речи. Ознакомить с новой грамматической темой Passive Voice, активизировать ее в устной речи. Продолжить знакомство с историей и культурой страны изучаемого языка- США. Повышать мотивацию к изучению АЯ.

  1. Введение в тему урока. Речевая зарядка.

  1. Hello, everybody. Today we continue speaking about the American history. The subject of our today’s talk is jeans. It’s because we are going to celebrate their 139TH birthday today! Happy birthday, dear jeans!ПЕСНЯ “Happy Birthday!”( СЛАЙД 1) + торт, шарики, кукла в джинсовой одежде…

  1. We don’t normally wear jeans to school. And the first question I’d like to ask you is:
  2. Do you often wear jeans in your everyday life?
  3. Do you like wearing them?
  4. Why do you like wearing them?
  5. What other items (clothes) made of denim do you wear? (caps, skirts, dresses, shoes, kerchiefs, shorts) (СЛАЙД 2)
  6. What colour can be jeans?
  7. What was the original colour?
  8. How old are the jeans? (in 2013 they will be 140!)
  9. Who was the first person in the world to introduce them? – Yes, right, it was Levi Strauss. And I asked the students of the 3 level to find some information about him.

Levi Strauss, 1829 – 1902, was a German-born American businessman who founded the first company to manufacture blue jeans. His firm, Levi Strauss & Co., began in 1853 in San Francisco, California.

  1. Levi Strauss was born in Bavaria, Germany. At the age of 18, Strauss, his mother and two sisters sailed for the United States to join his brothers, who had begun a wholesale dry goods business in New York City.
  2. In January 1853, Levi Strauss became an American citizen.
  3. Levi decided to open a West Coast branch of the family dry goods business in San Francisco, which was the commercial centre of the California Gold Rush. He sold canvas for tents to the gold prospectors. But his business wasn’t very successful. The gold prospectors needed pants made of cotton, with three big pockets and a little one for a watch.
  4. In late 1872 Jacob Davis, a tailor, started making man’s work pants with metal rivets for greater strength. He needed a helper, so he turned to Levi Strauss, from whom he bought some of his fabric. On May 20, 1873, Strauss and Davis received United States patent for using copper rivets to strengthen the pockets of denim work pants. Levi Strauss & Co. began manufacturing the famous Levi’s brand of jeans, using fabric called denim.
  5. Levi Strauss died in 1902 in San Francisco at the age of 73. He never married, so he had no children. Levi’s fortune was estimated to be around 6 million dollars. He was buried in California.

Read the first sentence. Answer the first three questions. This structure is called The Passive Voice. We use it to say that it was done to a thing or a person, and it is not important who did it. If we want to say who did it, we use by.

The past passive is formed this way: was/ were + V3 (ed)

  1. Выполнение грамматического упражнения 2В (в учебнике). Complete the sentences using the Past Participle of the verbs.

  1. Практика устной речи. Упр. 3 – Answer the questions using Ex 1.

  1. Введение НЛЕ.Now you are going to see a jeans exhibition at Levi’s store. Look at the picture of different kinds of jeans and name the styles.

(СЛАЙД 4) – flared jeans –джинсы клеш, Stone-washed jeans – ‘вареные’, Worn-looking jeans with holes at the knees – поношенные с дырками на коленях, Baggy jeans –‘ мешковатые’, painted hippy jeans –расписные ‘хиппи’ джинсы.

Now you are going to learn when each kind of jeans was introduced.

  1. Аудирование.

Упр. 4В. MATCH THE JEANS AND THE DATE. 1) the 1960s –painted jeans , 2) the 1970s – flared and stone – washed jeans, 3) the 1980s –worn –out looking jeans , the 1990s – baggy jeans.

Упр. 4С – MAKE SENTENCES ABOUT WHEN EACH STYLE OF JEANS WERE INTRODUCED. E.G. Painted jeans were introduced in the 1960s.

  1. Упр. 5 – ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

  1. Подведение итогов урока, выставление и комментирование оценок.
