J – Jenny

N-Hi, Jenny!

J - Oh, hi, Nick! How are you?

N - Not so bad. What about this evening then? Do you have any plans yet? Do you mean going out together?

J - Well, I don't know. I'm feeling a bit tired as I've just come home from school. I mean I don't feel like doing something energetic this evening. Maybe we can ... How about a film?

N - Yes, That'd be all right.

J - Do you know what's on?

N - No, I don't really know.

J - I think Castaway is on now. It seems to me it is about a woman who was on a desert island.

N - Well, tell the truth I've read the book and I wasn't much impressed. It's quite stupid I must say.

J - Is it? I rather liked it. Never mind. Let's see is anything else on. I'm going to take a paper. Hang on a minute.

N - Oh, I've just remembered! I think Room With  A View is on.

J - Oh yeah, I really want to see it. Let's have a look what time the performance is. Oh, God, you'll never believe it! Finished yesterday!

N- Oh, no! What a shame!

J -I really liked to see it....

N - Mmm, is anything else on?

J - Hang on... Oh, yes, Colour of Money with Paul Newman. What do you think about it?

N - Well, he won an Oskar for it.

J - Did he? Is it good?

N - I'm not very keen on that.

J - Oh, what else is on? ... Art Cinema ... Mona Lisa is on in the Art Cinema.

N - That'd be great! I'd love to see it!

J - Uhm, Actually I've already seen it! But I wouldn't mind seeing it again. It's really good and worth seeing. You'll enjoy it.

N - Are you sure?

J - Yes, that's a very interesting film.

Look at questions 5 and 6 (10 seconds). Now listen and answer questions 5 and 6.

N - What time is it on?

J - This day the first performance is at 6.30 and the second one is at 8.45.

N - 8.45 would be all right. We will be able to do our homework before that! Do you think that there can be many people for 8.45? Should we book some tickets beforehand?

J - I think you are right. There are always crowds of people at the Art Cinema at this time in the evening.

N - You can give me a number and I'll book two tickets for us.

J - Great! Here is the number: 352001 Cambridge.

N - Oh, thanks. Let me repeat it- 352001.

J-Just like that!

N - OK, I'll book two seats for us. What about some food first?

J - That'll be nice. Let's have some pizza at the cafe near the Art Cinema. See you tonight!

N - Buy, see you!

You will hear the dialogue again. Check your answers and write the exact words that Nick said about these films. (10 seconds).

Task II

Typescript

Jennifer: Hello, I'm Jennifer Young.

Mrs Black: Oh yes, Miss Young. Please take a seat. Well, will you tell me a little about yourself and your family?

J: Well, OK. Both my parents are from Cornwall and I was born in Exeter. For the last five years I've lived in London. My parents are both retired, but my father worked as an engineer and my mother was an accountant. I have one sister, who lives in Edinburgh, and two younger brothers who are now in college.

MB: Very good. Where did you go to college?

J: I graduated from the New College, here in London, only three months ago. I studied modern languages and I got my Bachelor's degree in French. I also took some courses in CALL.

MB: in CALL?

J: Oh, that means Computer Assisted Language Learning. During the course I learned how to use various computer programs for learning foreign languages.

MB: Good. So you can use a computer?

J: Yes, but I'm comfortable only with the most common word processing programs.

MB: That’s all right. What languages do you speak apart from French?

J: I'm quite fluent in Spanish, in speaking and writing, and I'm quite good at speaking Italian, but I might still need some practice in writing.

MB: I'm quite impressed. But we have wide connections with Chinese universities here, so you should also learn a little bit of Chinese.

J: Oh, I'd be happy to. I love learning languages and was even thinking about taking a course in Japanese, but learning Chinese may be fascinating as well.

MB: Good. Your teachers tell us you're very careful and you learn easily. You are also said to get on well with other people. Well. I think we'll be happy to offer you the scholarship you apply for.

J: That's wonderful. Thank you.

Task III

Typescript

Look at questions 1 to 5 (30 seconds).

Now we shall begin. You should answer the questions as you listen.

You have another chance to look at questions 1–5 (15 seconds).

Now listen and answer questions 1–5.

Ricardo: Here we are. Brochures for one day excursions. Let's have a look.

Barbara: A riverboat trip! That looks interesting.

Ricardo: Yeah. It does. Where does it go? And how do we get to the river?

Barbara: It says to go by bus to the river. The bus trip takes about an hour. That costs $ 5 per person each way. Then the boat goes along the river for 4 hours. And we can get a meal on the boat. That sounds good.

Ricardo: How much does it cost?

Barbara: Well, the boat trip costs $ 20 and the meal is extra if we want it. It all sounds great, but it's a bit expensive - $ 30 each and that's not counting the food and drinks.

Ricardo: Yes. It would be relaxing but it is a bit expensive and we wouldn't get much exercise sitting on a bus and a boat, would we?

Barbara: No, you are right. What about horse riding or cycling? Can you ride a horse?

Ricardo: Not very well. I've only ridden a horse twice in my life and that was long time ago. How much does it cost?

Barbara: Let me see. Horse riding's a bit expensive too - $ 30 for 2 hours.

Ricardo: What about cycling? That shouldn't be too expensive. Here we are, mountain bikes for hire $10 a day! That's great!

Barbara: And there's a helmet and a repair kit with each one. You have to wear a helmet by law.

Ricardo: We'll hire two bikes then. Here is $ 20. That's very good.

Now you will hear the text again. Listen carefully and check your answers.
