Подготовка к ЕГЭ по английскому языку (аудирование) с помощью сервисов Podcast и Audacity

1. Perfume can’t be a good present for many reasons.

2. Best presents are presents that create shared memories.

3. Practical presents are not good presents.

4. This sort of present can be good for everybody.

5. Good perfume is the best present that is always easy to get.

6. This present is a good way out, but not always perfect.

7. Think of a person’s lifestyle while choosing a present.

Speaker A

For any celebration you have so many people to give presents to: your mates, parents, relatives. It creates a problem of choosing an original present. I think everybody is so tired of traditional gifts! To my mind, the simplest way out is accessories. They are always different and can suit everybody. For family members it may seem a good investment if it’s expensive enough and it may definitely help your friends look great at a party!

Speaker B

As for me, I dislike pragmatic, domestic gifts. They may be useful, of course, but

when you get a present, you expect a surprise, not a new kind of washing powder. I do not understand people who are happy to get kitchen towels, cups, dishes or

anything like that. If you do not have any innovative ideas, buy some perfume or flowers – they are not practical, they are pleasant.

Speaker C

Honestly speaking, I’d be glad to get a weekend camping tour even to a local place

of interest. It would be the best present and the worst is perfume. Perfume is the

ultimate in personal gifts, even more than accessories. What scent a person chooses is unique and usually very subjective. It also looks like a last-minute decision which may seem impolite, unless you are absolutely sure in your choice, which, as I said is a rare case.

Speaker D

Giving and receiving presents can be stressful. A picky person can dislike some

gifts or even worse – give them to somebody else. Horrible! So I found a perfect way out – a gift certificate. For anyone who likes shopping it is ideal and you don’t waste time trying to find something special. But there are disadvantages about a gift certificate too. A person may think that you just didn’t want to be bothered and get offended, so it’s not a universal present after all.

Speaker E

If you can afford it, try not to give things, but experiences as a present. It is not

necessarily something very expensive. Tickets to the first night performance or to a

new exhibition in an art gallery, or anywhere else will do fine. It is even better if

you can go there together and share these experiences. Take a camera with you and take pictures! Such a present will leave long-standing memories which are dear themselves.

Speaker F

Living in a high-tech world, it would not be unusual to buy gadgets as a present. If your friend commutes, it can be an iPod, if your friend is very busy – an electronic organizer will be an excellent idea. There are millions of choices and they are not expensive either. Such a present can show the person exactly how much thought you put into choosing the perfect gift taking into account his or her way of life and needs.

 Script

Police Officer: Hello. 24th Precinct. Officer Jones speaking.

Man: Help. Yeah, uh, it was wild, I mean really bizarre.

Police Officer: Calm down sir! Now, what do you want to report?

Man: Well, I'd like to report a UFO sighting.

Police Officer: A what?

Man: What do you mean "what?" An unidentified flying object!

Police Officer: Wait, tell me exactly what you saw.

Man: Well, I was driving home from a party about three hours ago, so it was about 2:00 AM, when I saw this bright light overhead.

Police Officer: Okay. And then what happened?

Man: Oh, man. Well, it was out of this world. I stopped to watch the light when it disappeared behind a hill about a kilometer ahead of me.

Police Officer: Alright. Then what?

Man: Well, I got back in my car and I started driving toward where the UFO landed.

Police Officer: Now, how do you know it was a UFO? Perhaps you only saw the lights of an airplane [No], or the headlights of an approaching car [No]. Things like that happen, you know.

Man: Well if it was that, how do you explain "the BEAST"?

Police Officer: What do you mean, "the BEAST"?

Man: Okay. I kept driving for about five minutes when all of a sudden, this giant, hairy creature jumped out in front of my car.

Police Officer: Oh, yeah.Then what?

Man: Well, then, the beast picked up the front of my car and said, "Get out of the car. I'm taking you to my master!" Something like that.

Police Officer: Wow? A hairy alien who can speak English! Come on!

Man: I'm not making this up, if that's what you're suggesting. Then, when I didn't get out of the car, the beast opened the car door, carried me on his shoulders to this round-shaped flying saucer, and well, that's when I woke up along side the road. The beast must have knocked me out and left me there.

Police Officer: Well, that's the best story I've heard all night, sir. Now, have you been taking any medication, drugs, or alcohol in the last 24 hours? You mentioned you went to a party.

Man: What? Well, I did have a few beers, but I'm telling the truth.

Police Officer: Okay, okay. We have a great therapist that deals with THESE kinds of cases.

Man: I'm not crazy.

Police Officer: Well, we'll look into your story. Thank you.

Подготовка к ЕГЭ Часть A (1-7) (аудирование)

А1 The report says that 80 % of people judge others by their weight.

А2 The report says that poor people are fat and unhappy.

А3 The  man says people are seen as socially inept if they aren’t rich enough.

А4 The boy says that he doesn’t want to be fat.

А5 Jackie says that people shouldn’t be too upset because of their appereance.

 Fat or thin?

Jackie:

Hello, I'm Jackie Dalton, welcome to Entertainment!  Today we're going to look at an issue which often comes up in the world of Entertainment,  and that's being fat or thin.  It's a big issue in the British media at the moment.  One report says that weight is the new divide between people  – 'the new divide' – what separates people.  So forget social class – how rich you are, where you live: you are being judged on how heavy you are!  The report says that 8 out of 10 people judge others by their weight.  Most people think that thin people are more likely to be rich and successful.  And poor people are fat and stupid!  So let's hear more of people's views on all this and look at some of the expressions they use.  The first man will use the word 'culture'.  In this context, it means the attitudes or beliefs that are shared by people in a certain society or group.  Listen to some examples of how the word might be used in different contexts.

Voice:

There's a culture of laziness in this organisation, which is very damaging.

Voice:

There's a culture of secrecy within the government when it comes to security matters.

Jackie:

We'll also hear the term 'socially inept'.  If you're inept, you're not good at doing something.  In this case, being 'socially inept' means you're bad at personal relationships and don't fit into society.  So listen out for those two expressions now: 'culture' and 'socially inept'.

Clip:

There is this culture, especially in London, it's a prime example, where being fat is seen as being socially inept. And it's driven by your magazines…

Jackie:

So this man says people are seen as socially inept if they're too fat.  He says this is 'driven' by magazines,  which means magazines are encouraging this kind of attitude.  Next, he'll go on to talk about how his mother feels when she goes shopping.  What expression does he use to describe how she feels?

Clip:

There is this culture, especially in London, it's a prime example, where being fat is seen as being socially inept.  And it's driven by your magazines, clothes only being produced to certain sizes so only certain people can fit into them… and only certain people fit into what society's built as this perfect person, this perfect look almost, yeah.  I mean, my mum's the perfect example, she wants to go into the shops, she doesn't fit into the clothes and she's made to feel as though she's almost a second class citizen.

Jackie:

Did you catch that expression?  He said his mum feels almost as though she's a second class citizen because she can't find the clothes she wants in a big enough size.  A 'second class citizen' is someone who is seen as less important and less valuable than other people – not a very nice feeling to have!  Let's hear some more views on the issue.  Does this girl think it would be good to have more fat women pictured on the covers of magazines?

Clip:

I think it does matter. I mean, I don't want to be fat. Especially in magazines and things like that, you never see, like, a big girl and if I do see a big girl on a magazine cover I would think 'Why did they put her there?'

Jackie:

This girl doesn't want to be fat and says she'd find it strange to put someone fat on the front of a magazine.  What do this girl and this boy think?

Clip:

I think it does matter but only, like, on a superficial level. Like, when you look at someone, that's the first thing, I suppose that you notice - what they look like. But after that other things matter. I think it's important to be healthy. It shouldn't be about weight, it should be about health and happiness and other issues that are so important than what you look like. You shouldn't judge a person by his physique.

Jackie:

Phew, so there are some people who think your weight shouldn’t be so important.  The boy said you shouldn't judge someone by their physique – you shouldn't make decisions about what a person is like based on their body – their physique.  The girl said it only matters on a 'superficial level', it's not really important.

Jackie:

Well, I have to say, I agree with those last views– life is too short to spend it worrying about what people look like!  Let's finish with a recap of some of the language that came up.  We talked about 'a culture of…', which means a set of shared beliefs or attitudes about something.  'Socially inept' is an expression to describe someone who doesn't really fit in and is bad at personal relationships.  'To be driven by something' means to be encouraged by or caused by it.  'A second class citizen' is someone who is seen as less valuable than other people.  If something only matters on a 'superficial level', it doesn't really matter much.  'To judge' someone is to make a decision about what they are like.  And your 'physique' is the size and appearance of your body.

That's all for now, but keep practising your English and finding out more about the world around you with bbclearningenglish.com!
