Feminist punks perform in Christ the Savior Cathedral

 21/02/2012

Russian punk-rock band Pussy Riot, which was fined* in January for singing on Red Square, staged another improvised concert, this time in Russia’s biggest church – Christ the Savior Cathedral.

The young women stood in front of the altar and sang an anti-cleric song. The band called the whole performance a “punk-prayer.”

The outrageous performance lasted no more than five minutes – then the band was kicked out of the church, eye-witnesses told Gazeta.ru.

Blogger Alexander Kashin wrote that the only words he could make out in the song were “holy s**t.” Kashin suggested that it might be the name of the song.

The blogger published photos of the girls in their colorful dresses wearing colored tights on their heads with holes cut out for eyes. There were five girls, and as soon as they started their performance, several security guards ran up to them and started pushing them out of the church. Moscow police say they took all the girls to the station.

Soon after he published the photos, Kashin started receiving threatening calls.

Arrest extended

Tagansky court decided to keep three members of Pussy Riot, Maria Alyokhina, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samusevich under arrest until July 24, RIA Novosti reported on Wednesday.

The women have been behind bars since March for a performance in Christ the Savior Cathedral with their “punk-prayer” – “Holy Mother, Blessed Virgin… Chase Putin Out” on Feb. 21.

Tolokonnikova said the police’s extremism department threatened her with three to four years in prison if she did not plead guilty to hooliganism, Interfax reported.

She said she would plead not guilty as there was no crime in her actions. As for those, who were offended by her actions, she advised them to “love thy enemy” as Christianity suggests.

President Vladimir Putin has spoken out while on a visit in London over the Pussy Riot case that is currently underway in Moscow, RIA Novosti reported on Thursday.

“There is nothing good in this, I don’t really want to comment, but I think that if these girls had been, say, in Israel and desecrated* something in Israel – you most likely know that there are some pretty tough guys there – they would not that easily have gotten out of there,” RIA Novosti quoted Putin as saying. “Nonetheless, I do not think they should be judged that harshly.”

Pussy Riot nominated for Sakharov Prize

 14/09/2012

The three jailed members of Pussy Riot have been nominated by German European Parliament member Werner Schulz for the Sakharov Prize, RIA Novosti reported on Friday. The trio was sentenced to two years' jail for their obscenity*-laced "punk prayer" in Russia's main cathedral.

The 50,000 euro Sakharov Prize is awarded to individuals or organizations that have made a special contribution to the protection of human rights.

Do you think they have made a special contribution to the protection of human rights or they  abuse* the believers’ rights?

Pussy Riot member Samutsevich freed

10/10/2012

Pussy Riot member Yekaterina Samutsevich has been freed on probation after the three band members appealed their two-year prison sentences on Wednesday, RIA Novosti reported. The three were jailed for hooliganism for the punk-prayer performance in Christ the Savior Cathedral earlier this year. The remaining two jailed participants - Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova - are to remain behind bars after their appeal was rejected.

-Hm, can you still win the Sakharov prize if you're no longer imprisoned?
