The United States of America is situated in the central part of the North American continent. It stretches from the Atlantic ocean in the east to the Pacific ocean in the west, from Canada in the North to Mexico, the Gulf of Mexico in the South. It possesses many islands in the Pacific Ocean and Puerto Rico in the Atlantic.
The continental part of the USA consists of four physical geographical parts: two highlands and two lowlands regions. The mountains are: the Appalachian Mountains in the east and the Cordillera and Rocky Mountains in the west. Between these mountains are the central lowlands, called the prairie, and the eastern lowlands called the Mississippi valley.
The five Great Lakes between the USA and Canada include Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The main rivers in the USA are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Yukon, the Grande, the Colorado, the Hudson and some others.
Washington was created to be the seat of the USA. The city Washington is not on any states . It occupies the District of Columbia, abbreviated D.C. It is situated between the states of Virginia or Maryland , not far from the Atlantic Ocean. The population of Washington D.C , about 756.000 and together with the suburbs is over 2.800.000. Washington is only a place for government. The White House , the Capital and the Supreme Court are all in the United States. The Capital Building is the city’s central point. From this center the city is divided into 4 sections: North West, North East, South West and South East.  
There are a lot of famous people in the United States. Among them are writers, painters, inventors, composers. Here is the biographies of some of them:Mark Twain – His real name was Samuel Clemens. He was born in Missouri in 1835. He never finished elementary school. In 1871 he married and moved to Connecticut, Where he wrote his two masterpieces, The Adventure of Tom Sawyer and The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn.Jack London - was born in 1876 in San Fransisco, California. His family was very poor, so Jacs had to leave school to make money. In 1897 he went to Alaska to find gold. Instead, he found ideas fo his stories. His best books are: The Call of the Wind and Martin Eden

People buy and send Valentine cards to people they love.February – the third Monday – the Presidents Day.March – Mother’s Day. Children help their mothers at home and give them presents.April – Easter. Children eat chocolate eggs. Take daughters to Work DayJune – Father’s Day. Children give their fathers presents.
 
July 4 – Independence DayOctober 12 – Columbus Day. On this day in 1492 Columbus discovered America.October 31 – Halloween. People wear colorful costumes of ghosts, skeletons and witches. They decorate their houses in traditional colours: orange and black. They carve pumpkins to look like faces.November – the Fourth Tuesday. People gather together for a good dinner.December 25 – People give each other presents, bring home and decorate a Christmas tree, have a party.
  Softball Softball is very similar to baseball, but is played with a larger ball. Softball is a popular sport among American Baseball women and co-ed (combined men and women) teams.
  Football Football is a field game between two teams, played with an oval-shaped ball. The quarterback starts by throwing, or passing, the ball to one of the players, called a receiver. The receiver then tries to run with it toward the goal. The players on the other team try to tackle him to prevent him from reaching the goal line. The team with the most points wins.
  Baseball Baseball is game between two teams and is played on a field with a bat and a small white ball. Each team consists of nine players.
