ROUND-TABLE PRESENTATIONS                                      A Comparison of Two Cultures: Russia and Great Britain

School № 270       Classes 10a and 10b

The School Library, 9 December 2013, from 9.30 am to 11.30 am

Teachers: Ms Anastasia Kochetkova and Ms Galina Sviridova

AGENDA

1.    Students assemble in the library and divide into three groups.

2.   Ms Anastasia Kochetkova opens the Round Table and introduces the guest of honour:

Professor Baron Gregory von Laesser (emeritus)

      with the following salutation:

“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, our diligent students and our guest of honour. I wish to thank you all so very much for taking part     in our Round-table Presentations, about which, I hope, we’ll have            some discussions. This morning we’d like to compare some aspects of our two great cultures: that of Russia and of Great Britain. We’ve been studying a number of these topics in our classes here at school, but now we have a unique opportunity to discuss them with an Englishman, who is also a long-time resident of St Petersburg and a professor of English literature and English grammar at St Petersburg University.

And so I’d now like to introduce our special guest,

Professor Gregory von Laesser.”

3.   Ms Kochetkova continues:

“At our Round Table this morning we have the pleasure of listening to presentations from some of our students. We very much hope that they and their respective groups will enjoy presenting their chosen topics to all of us and to our guest of honour, Prof von Laesser.  You are expected to ask him some questions; he might ask you some questions in turn. Please don’t forget that the participants of the different groups should fill in their discussion cards, which are called Mind Maps.

Ms Kochetkova continues:

“There’s also a list of topics on the tables. You already know who’s going to make the presentations on these selected topics. The first students to give their presentations are Anna and Alexandra.”

4.   Anna and Alexandra stand before the two assembled classes and make their presentations. They then ask questions of our guest, and he might ask them some questions or make suggestions.

5.   Following this first presentation, Ms Sviridova shows everybody the Mind Map cards and tells the students just exactly what they are. An example of a Mind Map card is projected on the screen. While Ms Sviridova explains how to fill it in, the students begin doing so.

Ms Sviridova:

“There is a Mind Map card for each topic at our Round Table this morning. In your best English, each of you has to state 1) The topic presented and 2) any changes you would have made to the presentation, such as: “If I were Alexandra, I would have said that …”. A member of your group should then tell us what your group would like to add to the topic discussed…or what questions your group might have.  If Prof von Laesser has any questions or corrections, he might then make some suggestions or ask questions.”

6.   Ms Kochetkova invites the next group to make their presentation.

7.   After all the presentations have been given, Ms Kochetkova briefly discusses the table on the blackboard, which describes the subjects of the day and any discussions about them.

8.   Ms Kochetkova thanks all the participants, extends special thanks to Prof von Laesser and ends by announcing the date of the next Round Table.

9.   The morning’s programme concludes when coffee and tea are served.
