Bond:   Thank you, sir.

Prime Minister:   I am sure you realize that we disturb the agents of your level only in extra cases.

Bond:   I am ready to follow your instructions, sir.

Prime Minister:  Well, Mr. Bond, the thing is that one of Members of Parliament lost his son in Argentina.

Bond: Was the child kidnapped?

Prime Minister:  You see, he is not a child. He is a journalist for the “Sun” newspaper and he is 25.

Bond: Any trace of terrorists?

Prime Minister:  No. He went to Argentina on a business trip and we haven’t got any reports from him so far.

Bond: I see.

Two days later.

Bond:   I’ve visited all our agents. They don’t know anything, but I’ve seen an article in a newspaper. He wrote it. It’s about gauchos and their lifestyle. I think I’ll find him somewhere in the country. (Уходит)

**********************

(Музыка гаучо, выходят 3 гаучо, останавливаются  и обращаются к Бонду и залу)

Gauchos:-We are gauchos.

Gauchos:-Argentinean cowboys.

Gauchos:-Our ancestors came here in the 17th century. They were Spanish.

Gauchos:-They found beautiful Indian girls here. And they became our great- great…-great- grandmothers.

Gauchos:- It was the time of freedom. Flat Argentinean pampas.  A lot of horses and cows wandering from place to place, from grass to grass.

Gauchos:-We ride and tame animals.

Gauchos:-We dance and sing and drink.

Gauchos:-For two hundred years the government thought that we are a dangerous community and wanted to destroy our life.

Gauchos:-There was an opinion that we are terrible robbers and drinkers, but that isn’t true.

Gauchos:-We have got our own traditions and habits. We drink mate [ma`tei] and have special riding competition, a kind of rodeo [rodeiou].

Gauchos:- Not many horse riders can catch a hanging ring on a special stick when galloping a horse, but we can.

Gauchos:-After previous hard times we are now romantic characters of many Argentinean poems and films.

Gauchos:- (хором) So, we are gauchos! We are the legend of Argentina!

Bond: Well, that’s really very interesting! Extraordinary cowboys in distant Argentinean prairies. But could you answer my question?

Gauchos:- Yes?

Gauchos:- Have you ever met a young Englishman with a lot of photo cameras?

Gauchos:- Yes, he visited us about two weeks ago. He took pictures and tried to share our lives.

Bond: Do you know where he is now?

Gauchos:-He planned to see Indians and went to the mountains. That’s all we know.

Gauchos:-I think I’ll follow him tomorrow. Can I stay with you for the night?

Gauchos:-Yes, sure. Let’s have a cup of mate [ma`tei]. (уходят)

*******************

(Музыка «Полет кондора». Выходят  трое  индейцев, вводят связанного Бонда)

Bond: (недовольно) -Untie me! I’m not an enemy!

Indians: -And why are you on our lands? Here are the lands of our tribe.

Bond: -I’m looking for a young Englishman.

Indians:-Why?

Bond: - He was lost in your country.

Indians:- He is not lost. He is with our tribe.

Bond: -Can I see him? (Настаивает): But untie me at last!!!

Indians:- Untie him… (to Bond) You cannot see him. The men of our tribe took him to see sacred mountains.

Indians:- He wanted to see Iguassu waterfalls on the Parana River.

Bond: - Is it on the border of Argentina and Brazil?  (Снимает веревки)

Indians:-Yes. There is a national park there and ecological tourism is developed in that area. Iguassu means “big water” in our language and it’s really big! The waterfall is 72m high. It is the second largest waterfall after the Victoria waterfall in Africa.

Bond: To tell the truth when Eleanor Roosevelt saw your water falls she said that our American Niagara is just the kitchen tap water. Do many tourists visit this national park?

Indians:- Not many. We try to keep this place quiet so that future generations can see condors and lamas and capybaras and a lot of beautiful butterflies.

Bond: (Хитро) And are you a hospitable tribe?

Indians:-Of course, we are. We serve our friends national dishes: corn and potatoes with a lot of spices, pumpkin pancakes and mate.

Bond: Mate is getting popular in many countries now.

Indians:-Well, maybe, but the best taste of mate is when it is made in pumpkin kielbasas. It’s the source of vitamins for Indians and a good thing to give up smoking.

Bond: Do you hunt animals?

Indians:-Yes, we do. But it’s not hunting time now. We appreciate our animals. They help us. They give us food and clothes we can’t kill them any time we want. There is a special hunting season.

Bond: If I’m not mistaken your civilization was great some centuries ago.

Indians:-Yes, we could oppose the Inks invasion. The architectural monuments of our culture are on the Bolivian border.

Bond: on the Bolivian border… I’m surprised to see that Indians are Christians here.

Indians:-Oh, yes. Jesuit monks arrived here following Spanish conquistadors. They organized missions and taught us to read and to write. But still we lost our lands and live now mostly in the mountains or in reservations or in slums. But we manage some tourist business.

Indians:- We organize traditional carnival to worship our “Pacha mama” and it attracts a lot of tourists.

Bond: (удивленно) “Pacha mama” - What is it?

Indians:- Our motherland. We have sacrifices.

Bond:  (подозрительно) Oh, really?

Indians:- Yes, for example, confetti, coca leaves and young sheep.

Bond: A funny tradition. But when will your men return? Are the sacred places far?

Indians:- I think they’ll come back today and you’ll see your friend. And now it’s time to have a good dream. (Уходят)

Journalist: (входит один, фотографируя природу со всех сторон) AtlastI’minthevillage. With a lot of interesting photos, pictures and notes. And with a lot of Indian friends.

Bond: (выходит) Hello, John.

Journalist: How do you know me? It’s impossible.

Bond: Let me introduce myself, I’m James Bond.

Journalist: John Redhead, but…

Bond: I’ll explain you everything later, but now you should telephone your father immediately. (Протягиваетсвоймобильныйтелефон)

Journalist: Oh, yes, sure. My personal phone is absolutely out of use for about two weeks. (Берёт телефон и набирает номер.) Father! Don’t worry; everything is O.K. (Постепенноуходит.)

Bond: We are going to say Good-bye to a hospitable tribe today and start to Buenos Aires.

(музыкальная заставка - танго)

************************

В городе

Bond: South American Pampas are great, but I don’t see many people here.

Journalist: About 88% of population lives in cities. And Buenos Aires is the city of my heart.

Bond: What attracts you there?

Journalist: Firstly, the name is pleasant to my ear. The Spanish called this place Buenos Aires that means “kind winds, good winds”, but not now. In the city centre there is 9-thAvenue, which is 128 meters wide and there are 10 lines of cars there. But Argentineans are really proud of this street. It’s one of the widest streets in the world.

Bond: And what place is that?

Journalist: It is La Boca, the port district.

Bond:  Poor houses and dancing people?

Journalist: La Boca is the place where tango was born.

Bond:  And what about football? The boys and teens are playing everywhere.

Journalist: Football is the second Argentinean legend after tango. And the famous and worshipped Maradona started his career in one of local clubs.

Bond:  I prefer dances especially when the agent is a charming lady.

Journalist: Now we associate tango with Argentina, but first it was forbidden in the noble circles of Argentinean society. It was considered vulgar.

Bond: Strange! In Paris and London tango became popular at once.

Journalist: And only after that it returned to its birth country and was accepted in saloons. Now you can attend special cafes similar to English pubs or dance bars to have your portion of tango.

Bond:  That reminds me of 5o’clocks in Britain.

Journalist: Moreover, they organize tango parties. Tango is the symbol of Argentina. (Танцевальная пара показывает танго)

***********************

Bond: Well, here are our tickets to London. The plane is in two hours.

Journalist: Good-bye, Argentina! I’ll write a book about you!
