Apple Day is an annual celebration, held in October, of apples and orchards. It is celebrated mainly in the United Kingdom. Apple Day was initiated by Common Ground in 1990 and has been celebrated in each subsequent year by people organizing hundreds of local events. Common Ground describe the day as a way of celebrating and demonstrating that variety and richness matter to a locality . The first Apple Day was on October 21, 1990 in Convent Garden, London.
Common Ground has used the apple as a symbol of the physical, cultural and genetic diversity we should not let slip away .
There is a large variety of the « Apple Day » events. The festival brings some elements of the village fair. People can taste hundreds of apple varieties (some of which you will never find in the stores). They can also buy rare seedlings to grow them in their gardens and get a good gardening advice.
During the festival cookery demonstrations are held. A lot of apple dishes and drinks are offered- from apple pie and fruit and vegetable seasonings chutney, to apple juice and cider.
Apple Pie Ingredients: Pastry for 2 crusts (recipe below) 8 cups sliced, peeled assorted baking apples - about 3 lbs. (Granny Smith, Cortland, Jonathan) 2 Tablespoons lemon juice 3/4 cup white sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 Tablespoons butter 1 egg yolk 1 Tablespoon milk Directions: 1. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice. 2. Combine sugars, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg; add to apples and toss well to coat. 3. Fill pastry lined 9 inch pie pan with apple mixture. Dot with butter. 4. Place second crust on top of pie filling, cut slits in top of crust to vent. Seal the edges of the crust with a fork or by hand. 5. In a small bowl, beat the egg yolk and milk. Brush mixture over top crust. 6. Bake at 425 degrees F for 15 minutes. 7. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F and bake 40-45 minutes more or until crust is golden and filling is bubbly.
Traditional games during the festival can be called « Apple » stories – archery for apples and the most popular « The Longest Peel Competition »
The Longest Peel Competition has been a favorite with Apple Day organizers and their guests. Participants simply peel an apple in a spiral keeping the peel in one continuous piece then measure using a piece of string . Some participants use a hand peeler or knife, others use a hand wound peeling and coring machine.

World Record According to Guinness World Records: “The record for the longest unbroken apple peeling is held by Kathy Walter (USA) who peeled an apple in 11 hours 30 minutes with a peel length of 52.51m, 172ft 4in, at Long Ridge Mall, Rochester, New York on 16 October 1976”. Can you believe that?
More recently Apple Day has evolved into a weekend event, usually taking place on the Saturday and Sunday closest to Oct. 21 st although a number of venues now simply use the term Apple Day for their own events which can take place anywhere in the second half of October.
