Burnt by the Sun (1) the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1995. When the (2) was announced, a man tossed a young girl over his shoulder and strode triumphantly to the podium. Not yet having seen the movie, I found this celebratory (3) somewhat inappropriate — a doting Russian father sharing his moment of Hollywood (4) with his little daughter. But once you have seen Burnt by the Sun you will recognise that there could have been no more (5) gesture. The film is about life during Stalin's reign of terror; but at its bitter-sweet, sentimental heart it is about that father and his daughter and their special love for each other. The father — well-known Russian film-maker Nikita Mikhalkov — wrote, directed, and had the (6) role of Colonel Kotov in Burnt by the Sun. And Mikhalkov's co-star and the inspiration for the film is his daughter Nadia. He explains: "I decided to play this role for the unique (7) of helping the performance of my daughter, Nadia ... certain scenes being especially delicate on an emotional level." In several such scenes, father and daughter express and (8) their love for each other. Mikhalkov also made his daughter comfortable by calling her by her (9) name in the film, and Mikhalkov says: "I (10)  this film very quickly because I wanted my six-year-old daughter to play the role. Children grow quickly and lose the tenderness, the simplicity, and the charm their youth carries."

You are going to read a newspaper article about the influence of food on people's health and to answer the questions following it. Each question has 4 answers. Choose the one which you think fits best.

IS BROCCOLI THE NEW PROZAC?

Could our memory and ability to learn be affected by what we eat? That old saying: "We are what we eat", seems more pertinent than ever with a spate of research that suggests we may have to go no further in our search for brain power and happiness than our dinner plate. A study now being conducted by the Human Nutrition Department of the CSIRO is looking at how folates and other В vitamins found in green leafy vegetables can influence our moods and our ability to think and remember. "Folate is a vitamin that helps us feel good," says project leader Dr Janet Bryan. "People suffering depression often have low levels of folate, and people who have lower blood levels of folate and other В vitamins perform relatively poorly on tests of mental performance." Another recent study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology indicated that people who ate inadequately or missed meals experienced greater memory loss than those who ate regularly. Zinc, found in seafood, red meat, poultry and eggs, has also been found to affect the brain's performance.

And even much-maligned fat may be important in the pursuit of health and happiness. Research published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine suggests that low-fat diets can lead to depression. The research found that young women who had low levels of cholesterol displayed higher measures of depression and anxiety than those with normal or high cholesterol.

While these might be significant findings for the world of modern science, they are nothing new to the branch of medicine known variously as natural, alternative or complementary. Natural therapists have long insisted that a properly balanced diet is as essential for the healthy function of the mind as it is for the body.

To David Stelfox, director of the Melbourne College of Natural Medicine the idea that foods could affect the function of the brain is self-evident' Foods are cocktails of literally hundreds of chemicals which can have an effect on the human body, Stelfox says. "We know that certain foods affect the function of certain organs and body systems. The kidneys and urinary tract for instance are stimulated by foods such as watermelon parsley and celery. In the same way, some foods can affect our mental performance and moods. What we eat can determine whether we are anxious or relaxed, happy or depressed, alert or dull-headed." This explains why we turn to stodgy comfort food when we're feeling miserable, and why we were always told to eat fish before an exam. High-protein foods rev up our brains to tackle a difficult mental task.

1. The writer aims at drawing the reader's attention to the fact that ...

   A. we should be vegetarians.

   B. we should follow a balanced diet.

   C. we don't need meat, but we need a great lot of vitamins in order to be healthy.

   D. we should eat what we like and enjoy our life.

2. It is said in the article that it has been found recently that ...

   A. irregular meals can tell sadly on our ability to remember events and experiences.

   B. our eating habits very rarely have any influence on us.

   C. children's mental performance can suffer from high-fat diets.

   D. old people are always in bad moods and it is not because of their diet.

3. It has been proved in some studies that depression is caused by ...

   A. the lack of zinc.

   B. the low content of cholesterol in the blood.

   C. the high content of cholesterol in the blood.

   D. the lack of seafood and vegetables in the diet.

4. There is an opinion that the bad mood can be improved by ...

   A. using the special medicine.

   B. keeping a properly balanced diet.

   C. eating food which holds a lot of vitamin B.

   D. eating only seafood.

5. Some years ago it was found that ...

   A. any fruits could be used to treat mental illnesses.

   B. health problems could be treated only with the help of new medicine.

   C. there was a connection between certain foods and certain organs in the human body.

   D. children's diet should consist only of milky food.

You are going to read an interview with Louise Dyson, who runs the successful Louise Dyson Model Agency in Birmingham. In this interview she answers some girls' questions. Choose which answers A-J fit into the numbered questions (1-7). There are three extra paragraphs which do not fit in any of the questions.

1. Could you tell me some words about the modelling business?

2. What requirements should I meet to be a model?

3. I'd love to be a model, but I'm still only 5'6". My mum says I've still got a lot of growing to do. Should I get in touch with agencies?

4. How do I find an agency?

5. How do I approach an agency?

6. How do I tell if it is a dodgy1 agency?

7. Where can I get a proper training to become a model?

A. Ask someone who uses them. Ask your parent to ring your local newspaper's woman's page editor and ask who they book models from. Most major cities have model agencies, and sometimes even smaller towns have one as well.

B. I hear about dodgy agencies all the time, and people who have paid to appear in modelling videos or to take modelling courses. They're useless.

C. Fashion modelling is only a tiny part of modelling — we provide models for everything from catalogues to advertising and editorial (magazine) work to TV. Girls under sixteen are often needed for 'family shots', and advertising products aimed at teenagers. Younger teenagers can expect to take home about one hundred and fifty pounds a day, and more for TV work.

D. It can actually be quite difficult. Model agencies don't have to prove to anyone that they know what they're doing. Even the dodgy ones will probably be licensed and follow local council and employment rules. There's an organisation called the Association of Model Agents (AMA) which encourages its members to reach good standards, but it's mostly the big London agencies who are members, and just because an agency isn't in the AMA, it doesn't mean it's dodgy! The best rule is to trust your own instincts. If warning bells are ringing, don't ignore them because you're so keen to make it as a model. Dodgy agencies only survive because some people are so keen to make it they ignore what their common sense is telling them.

E. It's true that most of the London agencies look for girls of 5'8" and over for fashion modelling but lots of other agencies take on anyone from babies to teenagers and they realise that they still have lots of growing to do. As long as you're right in other ways and agencies think you have the potential, they'll still take you on.

F. For our young models we look for 'wholesome' girls who are above average height, with good bone structure, good hair and skin and a nice smile. It's just as important to be confident and natural. If that sounds like you, you could be model material.

G. There's at least one good agency in most of the major cities — Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham and plenty in London. It doesn't matter if you don't actually live near that city though obviously it helps if you have to go in for meetings or castings. We get about a hundred letters a week from girls wanting to get into modelling and from those, probably one is invited in for an interview.

H. Get someone to take a few really clear photographs of you — some head and shoulders pictures and some full-length. Then send them with a letter including your height, weight, measurements and age and enclose a stamped envelope addressed to yourself. Agencies should reply — especially if they think you're any good.

You don't really need to send any special photos to an agency — snapshots will do. If the agencies don't think you've got what it takes to get into modelling, it's disappointing but do take their advice. They're professionals and know what sort of girl will get lots of work.

I. If you are naturally the right type, a good agency will teach you what you need to know — if anything, a modelling course does more harm than good. The only training that's helpful is drama classes.

J. Occasionally, a designer comes along with a look so distinctive and unusual that it's not so much about fashion as a whole alternative aesthetic. When it's right, and captures the right people's imaginations, it can make tidal waves in the cool waters of ready-to-wear. The first Marni collection arrived in the shops in the autumn of 1991, and gradually she added to the base of quality leathers, on a mission to reintroduce colour and texture to a world dressed in black.

You are going to read an article about one of the famous singers among young people, Joey Mclntyre. Look at the statements below and indicate which of them are TRUE and which of them are FALSE.NEW BABY ON THE BLOCKThis blue-eyed baby boy was born to parents Tom and Kay Mclntyre on December 31, 1972 in the small town of Needham, Massachusetts. Excitedly awaiting the arrival of future phenom Joseph (a.k.a. Joey) Mulrey Mclntyre were his seven older sisters — Judy, Alice, Susan, Patricia, Carol, Jean and Kate — and older brother Tom. Always the eager entertainer, Joey grew up performing for the family and pretending to be a pop star with his sister Carol and his trusty air guitar.THE RIGHT STUFFTom, a union official, and Kay, a homemaker with experience as a community-theatre actress, had a sneaking suspicion that their darling young son wasn't just your average Joe, so to speak, so they enrolled the then-6-year-old boy in the Neighbourhood Children's Theatre in Boston, where they relocated. With tons of natural talent under his belt, the boy showed superstar potential from the minute he stepped foot on stage in the musical productions of Oliver! and The Sound of Music and he awed audiences night after night. That same knack for captivating crowds is what caught the eye of talent agents recruiting boys for a music group they hoped would hit it big. Little did they know how big they would be! The New Kids On The Block — which teamed Joey with Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and brothers Jon and Jordan Knight — soon dominated the globe with stellar hits like "Please Don't Go Girl," "Hangin' Tough" and "The Right Stuff" between the years of 1988 and 1994, setting the stage for many future boy bands and establishing sweetie Joey as the resident heart-throb of the talented troupe.HANGIN' TOUGHJoey admits that after the globe-trotting guys called it quits, it was a difficult adjustment to make. 'You are like the biggest group in the world," the now 26-year-old expresses, "and then you are not doing anything!" But that didn't discourage him from jumping back onto the stage — he did theatre acting for a while — and eventually back into the recording studio, where he wrote and recorded his recently released solo CD, Stay the Same. This energetic entertainer still ranks golf and working out as his fave hobbies, and his musical tastes remain the same, too. "I still like Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie," he remarks about the love-song legends who influenced his album full of beauteous ballads. "I mean, I love the stuff that's out right now that you can dance to," clarifies the cutie, who lives in an eight-bedroom house he bought in Boston back in 1990, "but that's just not me."

Понимание текста упражнение №4

You are going to read an interview with Ann Hould Ward, a costume designer who has created costumes for the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast. Choose which answers A-K fit into the numbered questions (1-10). There is one extra paragraph, which does not fit in any of the questions.

1. How did you come up with ideas for Mrs. Potts?

2. How many hours are involved in the costume production?

3. Is there excitement when designing these costumes?

4. What do you find the most challenging?

5. How do you make the body of the Beast look so real?

6. Tell us about the "Leah Factor".

7. So, the compliment will be "Mom, you got the Beast just perfect."

8. Tell us about the famous gown that Belle wears.

9. Explain the use of mythology.

10. Do you ever look at the finished product and say "Wow!"?

A. Good design is a visual medium for people. From a designer's standpoint, the magic of costume design is knowing it'll affect a lot of people. We have a thrilling project that is tremendously exciting and enhanced by what we've done.

B. When we began the work on the Beast suit, we invented what we call the "ekto-skeleton" — it's a moving back. This is so we can get the shapes we need for the Beast, so that we can see it move when the actor moves, rather than stagnant, just being on his back. It actually moves, so that the audience sees that in reality.

C. I looked at a lot of teapots and a lot of pictures of teapots. In creating the character's look you want to reference a lot of things — the period and the movie. You also want to reference the ideas of "what is a teapot?" Then you want to store all the information in your brain, and then put all the references together to create your own version.

D. The compliment is she'll sit and rapture in it. The compliment is the sharing of that event; to me, that will be the night of the excitement of the audience. Then I can take her there, so she can feel that. That'll be the case for each person, hopefully, whether it's a parent and a child, a girlfriend and a boyfriend, or a 75-year-old person who is alone.

E. I have one night that will happen. I think each person here will have that to their self. I think it's the time when the show becomes other people's show, that it is no longer yours. Then you have one moment where you say, "Oh, my goodness, that was good."

F. I don't have an exact number. But there are 110 people at Barbara Matera's costume shop working on the clothes. Another shop, Grace Costumes, is working on the villagers and Gaston.

G. The most challenging thing about this project is to have a smart design. The most challenging thing about the project is to make the designs intelligent, so that you're designing a broom, but you're doing it in such a way that it's important to the human body's relationship.

H. I have a ten-year-old daughter, whose name is Leah, and all along in relationship to the project, we have what we call the "Leah Factor". Which is "Yes, we all need to enjoy it, but Leah also needs to enjoy it." I also say Leah needs to enjoy it, but so does her 45-year-old dad, who paid for the ticket. And that is what I mean about intelligent design — in other words, the design has to support the project, the script and the fabulous music we have. It also has to have some relationship to the movie, so that when Leah comes to see it, she remembers from the movie that the Beast was in that blue jacket. Leah expects that blue jacket, and if you don't give it to her, she and a lot of other ten-year-olds are going to be sad. So, we tried to keep the "Leah Factor" in mind.

I. After several months of development, the creative team presented its version to key Disney executives. The response: unanimous praise and the commitment to bring Beauty and the Beast to Broadway.

J. When the director, choreographer, and creative team started working with the script, one of the things we recognized was the fact that we had to change the mythology of the event, because we were going to be dealing with real human beings in a Broadway situation. Therefore, the change in the mythology is really about how they are slowly turning into the objects; instead of that they are fully the objects. And, when you see them at several stages of the transformation into the objects, they never completely turn into the objects. Because that is what would happen at the end of the show, if Belle hadn't said she loved the Beast. K. This is the gown in which Belle dances with the Beast, when she invites him to dinner. I think it's a good example of what I'm talking about, the "Leah Factor". We all know that this is the fabulous yellow-golden dress that she dances in with the Beast in the movie. This is where we want to support that, but we really want our own Broadway version that will work well and focus well for an audience on stage.
