      At the beginning of the 6th century,  Scotland was ruled by Scottish kings and queens, but was divided between different groups of people the Picts and Celts (the oldest inhabitants), the Scots who came from Nothern Irelands the Britons, who were driven north by by the Anglo-Saxon inviders of England, and the Angels, who came from what is now Germany.

      England and Scotland were finaly united in 1603. And the son of Mary Queen of Scots became James I of England. Today Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. It is governed from London. All the inhabitants, speak English although about 100,000 still speak Scottish Gaelic.

     Most schools and univercities in Britain are founded by the state. They are controlled by the minisries of education in England and Scotland.

     There are also independed or private schools in Britain. They are not funded by the state. Parents pay the schools for their children. I wonder why these schools are called “public scools”?  Around 6% of children attend public scools. They are mostly from wealthy families. As a result, these schools are seen as schools for the “elite”.

     The school year is 39 weeks long and is divided into three terms autumn (September to Christmas); winter (January to Easter), and summer (Easter to July). The summer holiday is around 6 weeks long. There are two-weeks holidays at Christmas and New Year and at Easter.

During the Old and Middle Kingdoms, perfumes were only reserved  for religious rituals. Later the use of perfume spread to Greece, Rome and the Orient. Perfume enjoyed huge success during the 17th century in Europe. In 1656 the guild of glove and perfume makers was established in France.

     The use of perfume grew steadaly and the court of Luis XV was even named “the perfumed court”. It was due to the sctnts ( «злые духи») which were applied daily to skin, clothing, fans and furniture. In the 18th century “eau du Cologne” was invented. Today there are over 30,000 designer perfumes on the market.
