Рождественские обычаи и традиции в Англии
На Рождество все окна сельских домов освещены в Великобритании свечами, поэтому среди местных жителей ночь под Рождество называется «ночь свечей». А традиция эта пошла от старинного обряда сжигания Рождественского полена, которое сегодня заменяют толстой рождественской свечой, символизирующей победу света над тьмой.
Ветка Омелы (mistletoe)
Прекрасная традиция украшать дом к Рождеству вечнозелеными веточками

плюща, остролиста и т. д. сохранилась и по сей день, как и обычай, подвешивать на входной двери веточки омелы белой. По обычаю раз в году, в канун Рождества, у мужчин есть право поцеловать любую девушку, остановившуюся под украшением из этого растения. Случается это не часто, и чтобы не терять времени зря, один человек решил украсить ветками амелы зеркало, чтобы можно было целовать всех девушек, остановившихся полюбоваться на себя.
Перед тем, как сесть за праздничный рождественский обед, англичане отправляются в церковь. Двумя часами позже по всем телеканалам страны транслируют поздравление королевы Елизаветы, после чего всех ждет праздничная программа. Далее англичане обычно играют в шарады или другие настольные игры.
Рождественский стол по-Английски. Plum Pudding
Кульминацией Рождества является праздничный ужин. Считается: какой стол был на Рождество, такой будет и весь год. В Англии на Рождество подают запеченную свиную голову, и, как самое главное блюдо, — рождественский хлеб («хлеб Христа»), испеченный по специальным рецептам, украшенный ритуальными узорами и зеленью. Хлеб торжественно разрезают на части: обязательно одну из частей отдают бедным;
Plum Pudding
выделяется часть и для домашнего скота, птицы. В праздничные пироги запекают зерно боба, кольцо, монету и пуговицу, с помощью которых гадают. Боб – к счастью, кольцо – к замужеству, монета – к богатству, пуговица – к бедности.
Главный тост за праздничным столом – «Your good health!» – За ваше здоровье!
Рождественский пудинг!
Хорошая хозяйка готовила его за месяц до праздника, чтобы угощение «настоялось». Трудно поверить, но когда-то это изысканное сладкое и пряное кушанье было обыкновенной кашей. Оно так и называлось — plum-porridge — сливовая каша. Овсяная крупа варилась на мясном бульоне, затем в неё добавлялись хлебные крошки, изюм, чернослив (наверное из-за этого кашу нарекли сливовой), мед и миндаль. cо временем каша превратилась в пудинг- plum-pudding и завоевала почетное место и звание главного блюда рождественского стола. Теперь его готовят из хлебных крошек, фруктов, специй, а перед подачей на стол обливают ромом и поджигают. Некоторые любят поливать пудинг сверху йогуртом, так что если вам нужно йогуртница — выбирайте.

адресату. На Рождество в Британии принято дарить друг другу подарки одинаковой стоимости. Причем в семейном кругу церемония вручения подарков проводится по старинной традиции – по жребию.
От распространенных некогда процессий ряженых и драматических представлений ведут свое начало устраиваемые во всех театрах, концертных залах в дни святок Рождественские пантомимы, балы-маскарады.
Второй день Рождества в церковном календаре посвящен святому Стефану. В Англии этот день называется Boxing day. Это название произошло от обычая устанавливать в церквах перед Рождеством особые ящики-копилки, куда опускали приношения для бедняков.
Санта Клаус и Чулки. Santa and Stockings
С введением христианства обычай дарить подарки на рождество ассоциировался с принесением даров младенцу Иисусу тремя магами Востока. В память этого подарки дарят прежде всего детям. Подарки детям разносит добрый старый джентльмен Санта Клаус, краснощекий, с длинной белой бородой, одетый в красную шубу и высокую красную же шапку.

Обычай складывать подарки в чулок или носок тоже связан с викторианской Англией. Для него существует такое объяснение: «Рождественский дед» путешествовал по воздуху и проникал в дома через дымовую трубу. Спускаясь в один из домов, он обронил несколько золотых монет в носок, который повесили сушиться над очагом. С тех пор в Рождественский Сочельник на камин стали вывешивать носки и чулки в надежде, что туда что-нибудь упадет.
Кстати, дети, перед тем, как пойти спать обязательно оставляют пирог с фаршем или печенюшки с молоком для Санты и морковку для Северного Оленя Рудольфа из упряжки Санты, иначе подарков не видать!
Первая Рождественская открытка. Gift Card
С XIX в. вошло в обычай обмениваться поздравительными открытками — вместо обязательных когда-то личных поздравлений с праздником. В 1843 г. была напечатана в типографии первая Рождественская открытка, а вскоре их изготовление стало особой отраслью полиграфического производства.
Автором первой серии рождественских открыток, отпечатанных литографским способом с последующей росписью вручную, был сэр Генри Коул — первый директор лондонского музея Виктории и Альберта. Совсем недавно — 3 декабря — на аукционе в английском городе Девайзес одна из первых таких открыток ушла за 16 тысяч долларов.

Обычай украшать дома вечной зеленью, как считают этнографы, со временем трансформировался в обычай ставить дома Рождественскую елочку – символ вечной природы. А вот обычай украшать елку был привезен в Англию относительно недавно, в середине XIXв. из Германии.
Впервые роскошную украшенную елку преподнесли в подарок детям Королева Виктория и принц Альберт в Виндзорском дворце, после чего такая мода стала признаком хорошего тона. Огромная ель, доставленная контрабандой из Норвегии в подарок находившемуся в то время в английской эмиграции норвежскому королю, с течением времени стала традиционной. С тех самых пор ежегодно завозится из самого Осло на Трафальгарскую площадь красавица елка, загорающаяся тысячами разноцветных огней.
Первые елочные игрушки
Первые рождественские елки были украшены живыми цветами и фруктами. Позже были добавлены сладости, орехи и другая еда. Затем — рождественские свечи. Эти свечи были одной из главных опасностей, поэтому в гостиных держали ведра воды на случай пожара.
Такой груз был безусловно слишком тяжел для дерева. Немецкие стеклодувы начали производить полые стеклянные елочные игрушки, чтобы заменить фрукты и другие тяжелые украшения, а идея использовать электрические гирлянды вместо восковых свечей принадлежит английскому телефонисту Ральфу Моррису. К тому времени нити электрических лампочек уже использовались в телефонных распределительных щитах, Моррису лишь пришло в голову развесить их на елке.
Существует примета: на 12-й день после Рождества все украшения и декорации следует убрать до следующего года, иначе год будет неудачным.

Письмо Деду Морозу / A Letter To Santa Claus
Every year when I was a child I used to write a letter to Santa Clause. That was an idea of my parents. They wanted to save as much memories about my childhood as possible. So my mom asked me to sit near Christmas tree and write about my wishes. Of course at that time I believed that Santa would come few days before Christmas to our living-room and check my card.
So my parents kept all these letters and often bought for me a present that I wanted. Couple years ago when we were changing apartment I had found all these letters. It was so nice and funny to read everything. I started to prepare letters for Santa at the age of three. First I only drew pictures. When I was 6 I was trying to write the first real letter.
First my request was a chcolate. At the age of five I asked a doll. When I was 7 I wanted to have my own room. It is so interesting how much my desires were changing every year. I like the most my last letter that I wrote at the age of 10.
“Dear Santa! I know that this year I was not always a good girl. But Kate was worse and you gave her a puppy last year. We can not have a puppy, because we have small apartment. My mom said: when my dad finds another job with better salary, we will move to bigger house. So can you please help to my daddy to find a better job.
Also my granny is getting older and she doesn’t feel well. She told me if doctors could invent magic pills of long life she would play with me all my life. She is my best friend. Can you please bring for granny few these pills, so I would be so much happy. And if you still have space in your bag, please put for me 1 pink dress, like my neighbor has. Thank you. I will try to be so much better next year.”
That’s it. It’s funny, isn’t it? But my mom keeps it so carefully because she said that I was growing up a good and kind person.
I don’t write letters to Santa anymore. But still I make a wish every year. I want my relatives stay healthy and alive, my dad to have a good contract, I wish my mom to stay happy even if dad comes home sometime too late. For me now these are the most important presents. And if I want a nice dress I tell this to my dad.

Каждый год, когда я была ребёнком, я писала письмо Деду Морозу. Это была идея моих родителей. Они старались сохранить как можно больше воспоминаний о моем детстве. Моя мама усаживала меня возле елки и я писала свои желания. Конечно, это было время, когда я верила в Деда Мороза и думала, что он придёт к нам в гостиную перед Рождеством и прочтёт мое письмо.
Мои родители собирали все мои письма и покупали часто мне в подарок то, что я просила. Было так забавно найти и прочесть эти письма. Я начала писать с трёх лет, а точнее, рисовать. Когда мне было 6, я попыталась написать первое письмо. Первой моей просьбой была шоколадка. В пять лет я попросила куклу. А в семь- я хотела собственную комнату. Так интересно, как менялись мои желания с возрастом. Больше всего мне нравится последнее письмо, которое я приготовила в 10 лет.
«Дорогой Дед Мороз. Я знаю, что в этом году была не очень послушной девочкой. Но Катя вела себя ещё хуже, а ты принёс ей щенка. У нас слишком маленькая квартира для щенка. Мама говорит, когда папа найдёт работу получше с хорошей зарплатой, мы переедем. Помоги, пожалуйста, папе найти хорошую работу.
А ещё моя бабуля стареет и чувствует себя плохо. Она часто говорит: если бы доктора изобрели таблетки долголетия, я бы играла с тобой всю жизнь. Она - мой лучший друг. Можешь принести немного этих таблеток бабушке? И если будет место в твоём мешке, одно розовое платье для меня, такое же, как у соседки. Спасибо. Я постараюсь вести себя лучше в следующем году». Все. Смешно, правда? Но моя мама бережёт его и говорит, что я росла очень добрым ребёнком.
Больше я не пишу письма Санте, но каждый год загадываю желания. Хочу чтобы у родных было все в порядке, чтобы папе спокойно работалось, а мама была счастлива даже, когда папа возвращается поздно. Для меня это самые важные подарки. А если я хочу новое платье, то говорю об этом теперь папе.
