Beautiful Lake District

Слайд 2

The Lake District Cumbria is a county in the North – West of England on the border with Scotland, consisting of the former counties of Cumberland, Westmoreland and a part of Lancashire. It contains the Lake District and Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England.

Слайд 3

The Lake District consists of a mass of mountains (the highest is Scafell Pike), many valleys and sixteen main lakes. The largest lake is Windmere .

Слайд 4

Up in the “fells “(the local name for the hills and mountains) there are many little lakes which are called “tarns”. These tarns are usually very deep and often dark, as the mountains rise steeply from their shores, and the water is extremely very cold. There are also many little “becks” (the Cumbrian word for streams) which run down from the fells into the tarns and bigger lakes and form beautiful waterfalls where the rocks are steep.

Слайд 5

William Wordsworth The beauty of the Lake District was lovingly described by the lake Poets.

Слайд 6

Daffodils by William Wordsworth I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced, but they Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee; A poet could not be but gay, In such a jocund company! I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

The Lake District has been made into a national park. This does not mean it belongs to the government. It just means that there is very strict control over any new developments, alterations or buildings in the area. You cannot even cut down a tree without special permission and any new building which is allowed must be in character with those around it.

Слайд 8

Now that the Lake District can easily be reached by car, train or air, tourism has rapidly expanded. Many beauty spots become completely overcrowded in the summer. People come to the lakes for rock climbing, fell walking (mountain), boating, yachting, swimming, water skiing. Motor boats are polluting the lakes and are restricted to certain lakes only. Rock climbing and fell walking are very popular sports and for both you need to be well- equipped , as weather conditions can change so suddenly.

Слайд 9

The traditional Lakeland sports are foxhunting and Cumberland wrestling (a special kind of wrestling you can see at local events in the summer ).

Слайд 10

Many people in the Lake District work in sheep farming. Sheep wander freely on the fells, eating rough grass and plants. Most farmers keep Herdwick sheep which are a particularly hardy breed. Farms are usually small and isolated and are built from the local stone, the walls are often whitewashed, and they are always very thick, with small windows .

Слайд 11

A typical fell farmer speaks the Cumbrian dialect, which English people from other counties cannot understand. There are stories and poems written in the dialect, and there is a society of people who wish to preserve the Cumbrian dialect.
