At our English lessons we often talk about the UK. There are four parts in it: Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We know much about them, but I would like to know more about the Republic of Ireland. It is situated to the South of Northern Ireland. I would like to know about it’s culture, language, population and other things.

But most of all I would like to know more about it’s capital Dublin. So I’ve chosen this topic for my project. And I will try to tell you about the city of Dublin. It is not only the capital, but it is a political, cultural and economical centre of the Republic of Ireland.

It is the biggest city in this country. It’s area is about 117 square kilometers. It’s name was formed from the ancient Irish word Dublin. There was another name of this city – Baile Atha Cliath.

It is situated on the river Liffy. The climate is neither cold nor warm. It is +16 in summer and 5 above zero in winter. The population is abut one million people. It is ¼ of all the population of Ireland. The main religion is Catholicism. There are two official languages – English and Gaelic.

In 1988 Dublin celebrated one thousand year jubilee of it’s foundation. But history tells us, that this city was founded 5000 years ago. In 841 Normans came there. They built good roads and bridges. And in the thirteenth century the English came there. They began building a big castle. It was a symbol of violence and power for all population of Ireland.

Before the seventeenth century Dublin was a small town with large stone walls around it. But in the seventeenth century it began to grow. It became the cultural and industrial centre of Ireland. There were many squares, parks and beautiful buildings. Ireland became a strong country. The English parliament was afraid of it and began to try to join Ireland to Great Britain. It was not easy, but it was done in1800. The population of Ireland always wanted to be free from Great Britain. They fought against their invaders. The main leader of the Irish uprising in 1916 was James Connolly. Many Irish people remember and know him, they sing songs about him.

There are many places of sightseeing in Dublin. They are the old Dublin castle, St. Patrick Cathedral, Ireland Bank, Cristle Church and others.

There is Phenics Park and the Zoo.There are some interesting museums and libraries. It has a National Gallery too. It was founded in 1864. There are many famous pictures in it.

There are some Universities and Academies in Dublin. The students from all over the world study there. Many tourists come there to study English language. World famous British writer Bernard Show was sure that English language is cleaner in Ireland than in England. And he was really right.

Every year they hold a theatre festival in Dublin.

There is a famous stone Blarney Castle too. Everybody who kisses it will be loved by everyone. Many young people come there to kiss it. They say that Dublin girls are the most beautiful. So Dublin is a very old and attractive city. I would like to visit Dublin and Ireland some day.
