Christmas

For many British families Christmas is the most important holiday of the year.

It is a combination of the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ, and the traditional winter holidays.

On the Sunday before Christmas many churches hold a carol service where special hymns are sung. Most families decorate their houses with coloured paper or holly, and they usually have a Christmas tree in the front room. It is decorated with coloured lights and beautiful toys.

The most important and pleasant tradition of Christmas is the giving of presents. People wrap up their gifts and leave them at the bottom of Christmas tree to be found on Christmas morning. Children leave long socks near their bed hoping that Father Christmas will come at night and bring them small presents, fruits and nuts. Children also write to Father Christmas letters and say what presents they want to get.

In the evening the family will sit down to a big turkey dinner followed by Christmas pudding. Then they may watch the Queen on television as she delivers her traditional congratulations to the United Kingdom.

Halloween

Halloween One of the popular national festivals of English-speaking countries is Halloween, which takes place on October 31 on Allhallows’s Eve.                                 The main symbol of the festival is a pumpkin with a candle inside it and a scary face cut out. It is considered that such pumpkin doesn`t let demons inside the house. There is an informal hymn of this festival: Bobby Pickett`s song called “Monster Mash”.

People come to parties wearing their Halloween costumes; usually they are monsters and terrible creatures from books or films. Children go treat-or-tricking from house to house, that means they try to get sweeties. If they don`t, they play unpleasant tricks on people who gave them no candy.

Fortune telling is also widely spread on Halloween. At night children and teenagers tell each other horror stories and different legends. The most popular legend is about Bloody Mary, who is said to appear in a mirror after her name is called three times.

Another important tradition is organization of attractions, which scare their visitors. One can see a lot of horror films and cartoons on this holiday.

The holiday attracts us because we can show everyone our wildest ideas and live in the world of fantasy for a little while. Nowadays Halloween is becoming more and popular in Russia.

Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving Day is one of the most favourite holidays in the United States. Every fourth Thursday of October American people celebrate this holiday. They usually stay at home and have a big family dinner.

This day has a very important meaning in the history America. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated by pilgrims in autumn of 1621. They were European travelers who sailed on “Mayflower” ship and tried to find the New World. Before their arrival to America the country was inhabited by Native American Indians. However, when they settled here, life was quite difficult. There was nothing to eat and nowhere to live. First winter was especially difficult and many people couldn’t survive without fresh food. In spring Native Indians taught pilgrims how to survive in America. They now could hunt, fish and grow plants. In the autumn of 1621 they had a wonderful harvest.

To celebrate this occasion pilgrims decided to have a Thanksgiving feast. It meant that they were very thankful for their food. During this holiday the tables were full of fresh food: corn, beans, turkey, venison, pumpkin. Their Indian friends were also invited to share the feast.

Nowadays Americans continue celebrating this holiday and the main dish is still turkey. The most popular dessert is a pumpkin pie. People in Canada also celebrate Thanksgiving but it falls on every second Thursday of October.

St Valentine’s Day

St Valentine’s Day comes on February 14. It is not a legal or a national holiday. Banks and offices are not closed, but it is a happy little festival for young people. It is widely celebrated among people of all ages by exchange of “valentines”. A “valentine” may mean a special greeting-card or a little present. It may be for the person who receives the gift. St Valentine is the patron of sweethearts.

February 14 is the anniversary of his death. The day is the time to send little gifts to those you love. Flowers and candy are favourite presents which sweethearts send to each other. Valentine candy is packed in red heart-shaped boxes and sold for this one day. Valentines are special greeting cards. They are often coloured red, have red trimmings and pictures of hearts.

Some “valentines” are very fancy, they are trimmed with paper lace and little bows of paper ribbon. They have verses of love poetry printed on them. It is a good day for parties, especially by young people. The hosts trim the hall with red and white paper hearts. Refreshments are often coloured red, like red candy and punch. Sandwiches and cakes are often cut in the shape of hearts. Sometimes, a King and Queen of Hearts are chosen for the evening of dance.

Easter

Easter is a very popular holiday in Great Britain. At Easter the British celebrate the idea of the new birth by giving each other chocolate Easter eggs, which are opened and eaten on Easter Sunday.

On Good Friday bakers sell hot cross buns. Easter Monday is a holiday and many people travel to the seaside for the day or go and watch one of the many sporting events as football or horse racing. Egg - rolling is a traditional Easter pastime which is still popular in Northern England, Scotland, Wales and Isle of Man. It takes place on Easter Sunday or Monday, and consists of rolling coloured, hard-boiled eggs down a slope until they are cracked and broken after which the players eat them.                                 In some parts of Britain the competitions take place and the winner is a player whose egg remains longest undamaged, but usually the fun is just rolling and eating. This is the older form of the custom, since egg-rolling does not appear to have been a game to be lost or won.
