Exercise 1. Match these student's statements about learning English with pieces of advice they got from their teachers.

Pavel - Learning English is sometimes be really difficult for me.

Artyom - I think that my progress in language learning depends mostly on hard I work at it.

Julia - In fact all I think about when I am speaking English is how not to make mistakes.I think that it’s better to speak slowly and simply and make no mistakes than speak fast and make many mistakes.

Natasha - I have to first think in R know what I want to say, then translate into English, if I am not sure in my own language, how  can I express myself in English?

Igor - I believe that I should look up every new English word in a dictionary when I am reading. This is the only way to learn the language!

Misha- To understand what you are reading or hearing, you need to know all the words used. If I do not understand each word it is impossible to understand everything.

Olya – I believe that learning English depends mostly on how intelligent you are.

  1. Learning English well is both fun and hard work — depending on what you are learning at the moment. Learning English depends on a number of factors such as your previous life experience, your academic results, your need to learn. The world around also helps you and you need to be open. However, if you don’t work hard at times, you may miss some important things while learning from the world around you.
  2. You should try to communicate only in English. However, there are times when taking a moment to think about what you want to say in your own language can help you get your thoughts clear. Of course, it will take a long time to never translate, however not translating some of the time will help you improve.
  3. In fact you don’t have to understand every word to understand the whole. Relax, give yourself a chance, and you will see that you understand more than you think! Unfortunately, it isn’t always possible to learn by context if too many words are new for you. It’s important to learn by context, but there are also other possibilities.
  4. Everybody has the ability to learn English. It’s important that you know that some people learn English more easily than others. The most important thing is that you discover what works for you and do that! If you relax and enjoy your learning, you will also learn!
  5. If you learn something and expect it will be difficult, it will. You are too negative in your attitude to study. If, on the other hand, you just try to learn without making any judgments you might find that it is easier than you think! Sometimes learning English can be hard work, but sometimes it can be fun. 3ive yourself a chance!
  6. You will make mistakes so accept that fact. As you improve you will make fewer mistakes. However, if you try to make no mistakes you will never communicate. The only way to become confident is to speak a lot! However, the reality of learning English does require some conscious effort on the part of the learner to improve skills. Trust yourself a little!
  7. Keeping note of words that you think are important to you and looking them up afterwards when reading is useful to improving your vocabulary. However, it is also important not to try too hard, otherwise learning English will be boring. Besides there are many other ways to learn vocabulary. You can learn by doing a project, you can learn through context in reading, you can learn by watching people and understanding from their actions. Don’t limit yourself!

Exercise 2.Read the teachers’ advice about learning English again and decide whether these statements are true (T) or false (F).

  1. You can learn something only in the lessons from textbooks.
  2. It is worth trying to speak only English in the lessons.
  3. It is possible to understand the text without knowing all the words in it.
  4. Only very clever people can learn English.
  5. Learning English is as difficult as you think it is.
  6. You should try to make no mistakes when you speak English.
  7. It is necessary to write out all the new words from the texts.

Exercise 3. Choose the appropriate word in each case.

English is a very difficult language to learn unless you’ve been learning in it (1) since/with birth.
