Vincent van Gogh

Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in the Netherlands on 30 March 1853. He began to paint in 1880 when he was 27 years old. His most famous paintings are his collection called Sunflowers. These were painted during the last four years of his life.

Van Gogh’s style of paintings was inspired by the colourful paintings of the French artists, which he first saw in Paris in 1886. Between 1880 and 1890, in just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lives, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterized by bold colours and dramatic and expressive work that contributed to the foundations of modern art. Vincent van Gogh’s paintings are now among the world’s best known, most popular and expensive works of art. However, he was not commercially successful during his lifetime and was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide, and exists in the public imagination as the top misunderstood genius. Today, Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold at auction.

Vincent van Gogh had a very unusual personality. He suffered badly from depression and the long chain of events led to the incident of him cutting off part of his left ear. Though he worried about his mental stability, he didn’t think about his physical health, did not eat properly and drank heavily. Many people think that this depression was also the inspiration for his art. In a letter to his brother he wrote “I am not mad, because my mind is absolutely normal most of the time. During attacks of depression my mind is terrible but that helps me to paint well.”

                                                 The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories

The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories were first introduced in 1927. They are a series of books about the adventures of brothers Frank and Joe Hardy, teenage detectives who solve mysteries. The Hardy Boys were so popular among boys that in the 1930s a similar series was created for girls about a detective Nancy Drew. The cover of each volume of The Hardy Boys states that the author of the series is Frank Dixon. The Nancy Drew Mystery Stories for girls are supposedly written by Carol Keen. Over the years, though, many fans of both series were surprised to find out that Frank Dixon and Carol Keen were only pen names. Nobody knew who was hiding behind those names or whom actually these stories were written by.

The Hardy Boys and The Nancy Drew Stories were done through a process that is called ghostwriting. A ghost-writer creates a book according to a specific formula. Ghost-writers are paid for writing books, but their names do not appear on the covers when the works are published. Books for children or adults can be created by ghost-writers, but most often they work on book series.

The initial idea for both The Hardy Boys and The Nancy Drew Stories was developed by a man named Edward Stratemeyer, who owned a publishing company that specialized in children’s books. Edward Stratemeyer noticed the popularity of mysteries among adults and decided that children would enjoy reading mysteries about younger detectives too.

The process of creating is the following: first the plot, the setting, and the characters are described by the publisher. Then a ghost-writer is hired to develop the ideas into a book. After the ghost-writer has written the book, it is sent back to the publisher for corrections and is mailed back. Once the book will be approved, it is ready for publication.

The ghostwriting process is often attacked by criticism. They say it is designed to produce books quickly rather than create quality literature. Despite the debates about the literary value of these books, they have had a great influence on American and even global culture. Edward Stratemeyer and his ghost-writers will never be heard by most of Americans, but Nancy Drew and Frank and Joe Hardy will be remembered by millions of teenagers.

  7. Edward Stratemeyer specialized in publishing guide books for travellers.
  8. Nancy Drew and Frank and Joe Hardy became very successful TV shows after they had been published.
  9.  The publisher doesn’t see the book unless it is ready for publication.
