THE GREAT ESCAPE

A: Walter and Mary were two of the ravens that lived in the Tower of London, in England. Most of the time they enjoyed life there, but some days were difficult.  Mary and Walter loved to sit on the wall and watch people.  

That day, some of the tourists got very close to the ravens.

One little girl put her face very close to Walter’s beak. He wanted to bite her. Mary understood Walter’s wish.

Mary: Don’t, Walter!

Walter:  I’ve had it! I’ve had it!  I want to leave the Tower and find another place to live.

Mary: Walter, we can’t leave the Tower. We can’t fly, remember. Beefeaters clipped our wings.  

Walter: I’m so tired of this place and all people. (вздыхая)

A: Just then, Anne and William, two of the other ravens that lived in the Tower, came by.  

Anne: What’s the matter with Walter?

Mary: He is tired of tourists. He wants to leave the Tower.

William: I understand you, Walter. I also had a bad day.

Walter: Well, if we are so unhappy here, why don’t we leave? We’ll find a better place to live.

A: The other ravens agreed and that night they made a plan of how to escape from the Tower of London.

A: The next morning there were a lot of tourists in the Tower. But Walter, Mary, William and Ann were glad to see the people. The more people were in the fortress, the more chance they had to escape.

Walter: Let’s go to the Tower.

The four ravens went to the Tower.

 A: A large group of the tourists came by. The people put their bags down because they were full of souvenirs.

Walter: Aha! Bags! Plan number one. Okay, everybody find a bag and get into it!

 William jumped into a bag. 

Mary got into another bag. But it was full. She moved sweets and souvenirs and got to the bottom of the bag.

Walter found an open bag and laid down very quietly.

Ann tried to get into the bag but she couldn’t manage and landed near the woman’s leg.

The woman: Help! Help! I’ve been bitten by a raven! (закричала женщина)

Anne ran away quickly, Walter jumped out and ran after her.

A tourist sees William inside his bag and cries.

A man:  There’s a raven in my bag. Get out! Get out!

William jumps out and runs away fast.

A woman sees Mary in her bag and begins to cry.

A woman: A raven! Help! A raven!

Mary jumps out and runs away fast.

Walter: So much for plan number one.

A: The next morning the ravens began plan number two.

Walter: Do you have the sign?

Ann: Yes, I do. What do you think?

Mary (reads the sign): STUFFED RAVENS. ONE POUND EACH. DROP YOUR COIN INTO THE CUP AND CARRY ONE HOME!

Walter: That’s great, Ann! Let’s go! Put the sign in front of us. Don’t forget about the cup.

A: Ann, Mary, William and Walter stood still on the wall. Three children came and stopped to read the sign.

David: Oh, look, Jessica. For one pound we can have a stuffed raven. Do you have a pound coin? I want a stuffed raven.

Jessica: No, David. I have only 50 pence. Andrew, have you got a pound?

Andrew: Sorry, Jessica. I have only 2 pence.

David:  Then we can’t have a raven.

The children go away.

 A: Then a woman and a man walked up to the ravens.

Sarah: I want a stuffed raven, Alex. Will you buy it for me?

The woman touched William and rubbed his head, neck and feet.

William began to laugh: Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Alex: This is too strange, Sarah. Let’s go!

The man and the woman ran away.

Mary: Why did you laugh, William?

William: I’m sorry, friends!

Walter: Well, so much for plan number two.

Mary: I think we should stay in the Tower of London and forget about our plans.

Anne: I agree with Mary.

William: Me too.

A: Walter had to agree.

The four ravens learned not to pay attention to the cameras and children. The friends were happy to be together in the Tower again.
