Earthquakes and Volcanoes

The Earth's crust is constantly moving throughout the world. It moves in some places more often than in other places. The Earth's crust moves when blocks of the earth abruptly slip past one another. This results in an Earthquake. Earthquakes are related to cracks in the crust called faults.

The earthquake vibrations travel through the crust and the farther people are away from the earthquake the harder it is to feel the vibrations. The location below where the earthquake starts is called the hypocenter, and the area directly above it on the surface of the earth it is called the epicenter.

A seismograph is a device that records the motion at locations all around the crust. The size of an earthquake is called its magnitude. There is one magnitude for each earthquake that takes place. The lower the magnitude of an earthquake the less damage is done to a town or city. Large earthquakes can destroy entire towns and cities.

An underwater earthquake can cause a tsunami. A tsunami is a large ocean wave which can reach the coastlines and cause major damage and flooding. Earthquakes may also be the cause of some volcanoes to become active and erupt.

A volcano is a rupture on the crust of the Earth that allows hot lava, volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface. The hot molten rock deep below Earth's surface is called magma and it rises upward. If the magma reaches the surface of the Earth it may flow out as lava, or it is hurled out when the volcano erupts.

Scientists have classified volcanoes into three main categories: active, dormant, and extinct. With an active volcano there is the possibility the volcano will erupt, and most likely recently erupted. A dormant volcano is a volcano is one that has not erupted in a very long time but there is possibility that it may erupt sometime in the future. The third type, the extinct volcano, is one that erupted thousands of years ago and there is no possibility of another eruption.

In summary, an earthquake caused by a fault in the earth's crust, and a volcano, caused by a rupture on the crust of the Earth, are related to each other and both can cause major damage and destruction. An earthquake can also cause a tsunami, which is a giant ocean wave. There are three types of volcanos: active, dormant, and extinct. Earthquakes and volcanos are both considered natural disasters.

CONSUMER ADVICE ON BUYING SHOES

If you have a problem with shoes you’ve recently bought, follow this four-step plan.

Step 1

Go back to the shop with proof of purchase. If you return faulty shoes at once, you have a right to insist on a refund. It is also likely that you will get one if you change your mind about the shoes and take them back immediately. But, if you delay or you’ve had some use out of the shoes, the shop may not give you all your money back. It depends on the state of the shoes and how long you’ve had them. The shop may want to send the shoes back to head office for inspection. This is fair and could help to sort things out. But don’t be put off by the shop which claims that it’s the manufacturer’s responsibility. This isn’t true. It’s the shop’s legal duty to put things right.

Step 2

If you don’t seem to be getting anywhere, you can get help. Free advice is available from a Citizens Advice Bureau (get the address from your telephone book), or from a local Trading Standards Department. Again, consult the telephone directory under County, Regional or Borough Council. All these departments have people who can advise you about faulty goods and what to do with them.

Step 3

Most shops are covered by the Footwear Code of Practice. If the shop you are dealing with is covered, you can ask for the shoes to be sent to the Footwear Testing Centre for an independent opinion. The shop has to agree with whatever the resulting report says. There is a charge of £21. You pay £7 and the shop pays the rest (including postage).

Step 4

As a last resort, you can take your case to court. This is not as difficult as it sounds. The small claims procedure for amounts up to £ 1000 (£750 in Scotland) is a cheap, easy and informal way of taking legal action.

The relevant forms are available from your nearest County Court or, in Scotland, the Sheriff Court. You can get advice and leaflets from the Citizens Advice Bureau. Alternatively, some bookshops sell advice packs which contain the relevant forms.

Do the following statements agree with the information given in the text?

In boxes 1-8 on your answer sheet, write:

TRUE              if the statement agrees with the information

FALSE             if the statement contradicts the information

NOT GIVEN   if there is no information on this

1. If you return unwanted shoes straightaway, with a receipt, the shop will probably give you a refund.

2. You are advised to accept a credit note if you are offered one.

3. The factory is responsible for replacing unwanted shoes.

4. You can ask any shoe shop to send shoes to the Footwear Testing Centre.

5. Shops prefer to give a credit note rather than change shoes.

6. The customer contributes to the cost of having faulty shoes tested.

7. The procedure for making a legal claim is easier in Scotland.

8. Legal advice and forms can be bought from certain shops.

A Accidental Damage Joshua Stanley has had a lucky escape after he fell down a mineshaft, injuring his skull. The teenager, who had been exploring the mine with a friend, lost his grip and plummeted to the bottom of the shaft in the early hours of the morning. Emergency services were called to the scene and were assisted by more than 50 people from a nearby campsite. By using various ropes and baskets, the teenager was hoisted to the opening of the mine. The rescue operation took a total of six hours, after which Joshua was rushed to hospital where he received treatment for his head injury. He admitted that entering the shaft after dark had been irresponsible, and thanked all the people involved for their efforts. “Without them, I’d still be stuck down there,” he said.

fire that burned for 22 hours after a factory exploded has finally been extinguished. The explosion occurred at 6pm when the factory was closed. “At first I thought it was an earthquake!” recalls Lucy Brown, an eye-witness who lives in the area. From her window, she could see clouds of dark smoke and fireballs shooting into the sky. Shortly after the blast, local residents were evacuated to a nearby college. However, the area has now been deemed safe for them to return to their homes. Officials have confirmed that there were no casualties as a result of the explosion. Although, there were no serious injuries, two factory guards were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Text C

At the side of a railway line in North Carolina, a bus lies mangled, crushed beneath the weight of a freight train. Half of the bus is missing, its roof warped and twisted. While this may look like the scene of a terrible accident, it is actually the set of a spectacular film stunt! The remnants of the crash were left as a tourist attraction and have been untouched for the past 18 years. Most filmmakers usually opt for scaled-down models to film train wrecks, but this director believed that the use of models would be “cheating!” Instead, he insisted upon producing a real train crash and was even given a budget of £1 million to do so! The result of his ambition is one of the most iconic train wrecks in film history. He even won an award for best action scene of the year.

Text D

Yesterday afternoon, an oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, leaving 16 workers in intensive care. The explosion triggered an oil spill which continues to flow into the ocean at a rate of 53,000 barrels per day. The Grande Isle in Louisiana, once a beautiful sandy coastline, is now covered in a layer of black oil. Countless marine animals have been washed up along the shore, trapped in the thick slime. Volunteers have rescued hundreds of animals so far, but there is concern that thousands of species will be affected by the most disastrous oil spill in history. A full investigation into the exact cause of the explosion is currently underway.

«Who lives long?»

1.It has always interested people how to make life longer. Some people believe in diets, some in exercise, some in nature. Scientists analysed the factors of a long life. It turns out, that people who live really long and stay in good health, may live in very different climates and on very different diets. There are people who live near the sea, and people who live high in the mountains, people who eat lots of meat and people who are vegetarians, people who drink wine, and who never touch it. But there is one feature that is common for every group of long- livers. It is respect for parents.

2.But if you think about it, it’s quite logical. Conflicts in the family are the key factors of a ruined nervous system. Our health depends more on our good nerves than on anything else.

When we live in harmony with our parents, children, husbands and wives, there isn’t much to worry about.

3.Recently they performed a social poll in Bangladesh, one of the poorest countries in the world. Eighty percent of the population called themselves happy. They have big united families, and even poverty does not matter.
