Тема урока: Что мы знаем о Великобритании?

Тип урока: урок-соревнование; урок-игра

Цели:

  • Тренировка навыков аудирования, чтения, монологической и письменной речи на английском языке;
  • Совершенствование лексических навыков;
  • Актуализация страноведческого материала;
  • Развитие интереса учащихся к изучению английского языка, культуре и традиций Великобритании.

Задачи:

Предметные: Развивать умения учащихся в монологическом говорении, просмотровом чтении, аудировании и письме на английском языке. Активизировать общие и частные познания учащихся о Великобритании, закрепить использование изученной лексики и грамматики в основных видах речевой деятельности речи.

Метапредметные: Развивать способность к аналитическому мышлению. Активизировать метапредметные связи с историей и географией по общеё теме Великобритания. Расширить общий лингвистический кругозор.

Личностные: Обеспечить условия для создания благоприятного, эмоционального психологического климата в учебном сообществе для формирования коммуникативной культуры учащихся. Формирование уважения к другим народам.

Ход урока

Greetings everyone! Glad to meet you, boys and girls. Today we are going to have an unusual lesson: "The Star Hour". Two teams will take part on it. Now let them introduce themselves and announce the captains.

We shall go on an imaginary Journey to the land of Great Britain and we'll talk about England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The motto of our lesson is: "It's better to see something once than to hear about it a hundred times".

And our main question for today  is: what made Great Britain a rich and powerful country with so many colonial countries.

It's rather romantic to travel on board the ship.

There will be 8 rounds and for each of them you can get a star. The more stars the more chances to win!

Round I

But on our way we can get into trouble because of storms. We should know the right way not to be lost.

The first game is to choose some geographical names connected with Great Britain. You will get one star if you read and choose the names correctly. Read the pairs of names and choose in succession!

Oh, what a strange ship is on our way. I think, it's a pirates' ship. They swim a lot and know much. If you together discuss their questions about Great Britain’s geography and your captains manage to show all on the map, we'll be able to continue our voyage. The winner gets a star.

I'd like to invite you on a tour about London. If you don't forget, we are looking for the reason, what made Great Britain so rich and powerful. You will get cards with questions. Please distribute them in teams then read in succession and look at the board to choose the right answer. 30 seconds to discuss each question.

  1. Twelve black ravens live there. William the Conqueror built it in the 11thcentury. (The Tower)
  2. It has a large reading Hall. It is situated at number 7, Russel Street. (The British Museum)
  3. There is a monument to Queen Victoria in front of this palace.(Buckingham Palace)

It is said that those who don't know history, can repeat it. Historical events and historical monuments hide a lot of interesting facts about the history of the country. Let's read about them and try to guess the missing words. One short text for each team – everyone can see them on the board and each of you on your table.

Do not forget to explain your choice after answering. Choose one member to do it.

Midsummer's day, June 24th is the longest day of the year. On that day a very old custom at_________ in England is held. _________ is one of the Europe's biggest Stone circles that is 10 or 12 metres high. The earliest part of ____________ is 5000 years old. The Druid priests used it for a calendar. The sun and the stones let them know when the months and seasons start. They introduced it about 2000 years ago. On the morning of June 24th the sun shines on one famous stone - the Heel Stone.

Different countries have different national emblems or symbols. For Scotland, the__________has been the national emblem since it was adopted by King James III, in the 15th century. There is a legend that in the 8th century, an army of enemies were coming up at night to attack the castle, the seat of the Scottish kings. The Scots army had no idea that an enemy was close until one of the barefoot Danish soldiers stepped on a __________ and cried of pain. The Scots heard the noise, ran out of the castle and defeated the Danes in the battle.

Well, dear friends, we have come to the last task of our rout. We have traveled to different cities and towns, to the parts of Great Britain. When you answer four questions, you'll be able to know what made Britain rich and powerful. The first team to answer will get an additional star (if the answers are correct for both teams).

People of this country prefer the traditional festival of Hogmanay, of New Year's Eve, to Christmas. (Scotland)
