Discovering America.

  1. All right, let’s start with the States Puzzle. You should make this puzzle and remember the states of the USA.  (Supplement 1 \ Supplement 2)
  2. You have some Flash Cards with some information about some states of the USA. Read them and share some facts what you have known in your groups. (Flash Cards)
  3. Now demonstrate your knowledge and answer some questions. Each question begins with these words “What state is it?” when you hear the name of some state find it in your puzzle maps. When all states in your cards  in your group are mentioned don’t forget to say “BINGO!”

1)Crystal Ice Cave, near American falls, is famous for its frozen river and frozen waterfall. (Idaho)

2) Samuel Clements, alias Mark Twain was born there.  (Missouri)

3) The Winter Olympics were held in lake Placid in 1932 and 1980. (New York)

4) This state was the first state admitted to the Union following the original thirteen colonies. (Vermont)

5) The faces of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln were sculpted into Mount Rushmore in the early twentieth century. (South Dakota)

6) Harvard University was the first institution of higher learning in north America. It was founded in 1636. (Massachusetts)

7) Mammoth  Cave is the world’s longest cave. (Kentucky)

8) This state is called The First State because it was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution. (Delaware)

9) The U.S. Space and Rocket Center Museum is located there. (Alabama)

10) Mount Whitney, rising 14,494 feet, is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. (California)

11) This state is made up of islands. The eight main islands are: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, lanai, Kahoolawe, and Hawaii. (Hawaii)

12) Carlsbad Caverns of this state  is home to 300,000 bats.  (New Mexico)

13) In 1844 Samuel Morse, inventor of the telegraph and the Morse Code, sent the first telegraph message from Washington D.C., to Baltimore. (Maryland)

14) In Detroit, in 1913 henry Ford introduced the first assembly line to produce ford cars. Detroit is now known as the car capital of the world. (Michigan)

15) The world’s first skyscraper was built in Chicago in 1885. (Illinois)

16) In 1903 the Wright Brothers made the first successful powered, manned flight at Kitty Hawk. (North Carolina)

17) The smallest state. (Rhode island)

18) The great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere. (Utah)

19)The 1996 summer Olympics were held in Atlanta. (Georgia)

20) During the war 1812, the British burned the White House, but the stone walls built in 1792 still stand. (District of Columbia)

5) I am sure now you know a lot of tourist attractions of the USA. I wonder how well you can define them by description. The next activity “Fan and Pick” helps us to find out it. (Supplement 4)  

6) Each of you knows who is George Washington, Jack London, Mark Twain…It is not so complicated. But there are much more famous people in America. Can you remember them? By the way, some objects probably  remind you about some of them. (Supplement 5)
