Lesson Plan

Video based lesson

Topic: Animals. Rescue Cases

Target Language: action verbs; language used to describe animal incindents.

Students: 14-15-year-olds; 9th graders

Level: Pre- Intermediate

Assumed knowledge:  vocabulary students are going to practise is mostly familiar to them, but they are not used to retelling from another person’s view.

Materials: pictures; You Tube video about a moose; You Tube video about a reindeer; white board; two-slide presentation (context sentences and a gap-filling exercise).

Anticipated Problems & Solutions: students may be unsure using new words while they retell the story; if so, they need pronunciation practice at the beginning of the lesson and they should be provided with pictures and / or context sentences to clarify meanings of the new words.

Can you guess the meaning of these words?

snow mobilers / reindeer / digging / a shovel / reunite / antlers / sticky swamp /

wobbling / run free side by side / kind-hearted

Think of a story, based on these words.

Share your story with your class.

Watch two videos.

Which video might the words belong to? Why do you think so? What could a title of the story, and the topic of the lesson be?

Answer the questions: Was it easy for the snow mobilers to spot a reindeer in the snow? Why?  What had happened to the reindeer? Why was it a hard work for the people to pull the reindeer up?

Do you remember who did that? Complete the sentences with the word naming a doer/doers. (worksheets)

Who remembers the story better, in more details? In your group, prepare retelling the story – from the reindeer’s view, and – from the snow mobilers’ view. Be ready to tell your version of the story in 5 minutes.

Have you known about such incidents? Have you ever helped animals?

Write a paragraph in which you describe an incident from your life, about helping an animal.

Script.

These snow mobilers spotted a head sticking out of the snow belonging to a beautiful reindeer, that had fallen into a hole and was completely stuck.

They started digging around him with a shovel, and did everything to make him reunite with his deer friend that was patiently waiting.

Once the hole was wider, it was time to grab his antlers, and make an attempt to drag him up.

He (one of the men) used his strength to free the poor thing from the sticky swamp. But he was way heavier than expected… so both of them grabbed an antler each, working together to give the reindeer freedom again.

At last their amazing effort paid off.

With slightly wobbling legs he went looking for his friend who refused to leave him behind.

They were happily reunited, and could run free side by side again.

Thanks to these kind-hearted men for not giving up on this beautiful soul.
