Holidays of Great Britain

Слайд 2

There are fewer public holidays in Great Britain than in other European countries. They are: Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday and Summer Bank Holiday, Halloween . Public holidays in Britain are called bank holidays, because the banks as well as most of the offices and shops are closed.

Слайд 3

The most popular holiday is Christmas (December 25)

Слайд 4

On Christmas Eve offices and public buildings close at one o’clock, but the shops stay open late. Most big cities, especially London, are decorated with Christmas trees and colored lights across the streets. Everybody wants to be at home for Christmas. At homes there’s a great air of expectation. The children are decorating the tree, housewives are busy in the kitchen getting things ready for the next day’s dinner. It’s also a tradition to send Christmas cards and to exchange presents.

Boxing Day (December 26)

Слайд 6

December 26th is called Boxing day because traditionally it was the day for people still give a “Christmas box” to the postman and milkman, but it’s usually some money. This is the day when one visits friends, goes for a drive or a long walk or just sits around recovering from eating too much food. In the big cities and towns, tradition on that day demands a visit to the Christmas pantomime where one is entertained by the story of Cinderella, or Puss in Boots, or whoever it may be.

New Year (December 31 – January 1)

Слайд 8

New Year's Day is less popular in Britain than Christmas. But in Scotland is the biggest festival of the year. Many British citizens watch as the clock tower's (incorrectly known as "Big Ben" - which is actually the name of the bell within the tower) minute hand finally reaches midnight. At this time, Big Ben rings in the new year. Many people celebrate by either having parties at home, or by going out and partying with friends. Many people also make new years resolutions (as is customary in many other countries in the world). In Scotland, a common tradition is to sing 'Auld Lang Syne' at midnight to bring in the new year.

Слайд 9

Good Friday Good Friday is the Friday before Easter when the church marks the death of Christ. On this day people eat hot buns.

Слайд 10

Easter Day Easter begins on Good Friday and ends on the Easter Monday. On this day, the British exchange chocolate eggs and hot cross pattern.

Слайд 11

Easter Monday Easter Monday is the day after Easter Day. It is a traditional day for the start of the summer tourist season.

Слайд 12

Слайд 14

Saint Valentine’s Day (February 14) This holiday came to our country from Western countries. During the day people send cards with hearts and romantic confessions to their beloved ones. Many couples will spend the evening celebrating with a special meal.

Слайд 15

Слайд 16

Halloween (October 31)

Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October. It’s a very picturesque festival. Children as well as adults dress up like monsters, witches, vampires, zombies, etc. People have parties more like carnival. Children traditionally knock at doors and ask for sweets, saying «Trick or treat». They might really play a prank if they are not given sweets.
