Angel: I’m so happy that we are all here together! Today is the best holiday in the year!

Devil: What holiday? What are you going to celebrate here?

A: Christmas of course! This is the most famous festival worldwide! It is a very old holiday, people have been celebrating it for many centuries already.

D: Really? I always thought that Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ and people began to celebrate this festival only since that time.

A: You are mistaken. Listen!

Teacher: How old is Christmas?

Student1: The history of Christmas dates back over 4000 years. Many of our Christmas traditions began with the Mesopotamian celebration of New Year.

T: What did they believe in?

T: Did only Mesopotamians have such a holiday?

St2: The Roman’s also had a holiday in winter. They celebrated their god Saturn. The festival began in the middle of December and ended in January 1st.

T: And now it’s a religious holiday. Many people all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

A: You see? This holiday is very famous! People get together, go to churches, children receive presents.

D: Who gives them these presents? You?

A: Why me? Santa Claus. By the way, in different countries he has different names and different appearance. Listen!

St1: Santa Claus has become the most beloved symbol. The history begins with the Bishop of Myra in Asia. Saint Nicholas was known for his charity. He gave all his money to the poor. In 1860s cartoonist Thomas Nast drew pictures of a plump and kind Santa Claus. Since that time this image has become very popular.

St2: In Germany Saint Nicholaos  travels  with an assistant Krumpus. He comes with a sack on his back and a rod in his hand. Good children receive a gift, but naughty children are punished by the assistant with the rod.

St4: In many Spanish countries the children wait presents from the three Kings.

D: So, this holiday is very popular among children because they have their presents and what about young people? Do they celebrate this holiday?
